Citrus Flatid Planthopper (Metcalfa pruinosa) on the Lynn Valley Trail earlier this month. Although named for one of its host plant groups, Citrus, this species of Planthopper can and does develop on many different types of trees or shrubs. These Planthoppers mate in the Fall, and lay eggs which will overwinter. The nymphs that hatch from these eggs have waxy filaments covering them, and though a tree branch may be coated by these nymphs they rarely cause serious damage to their host plants. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #lynnvalleytrail #citrusflatidplanthopper #metcalfa #metcalfapruinosa #planthopper #homoptera #insectecology #macrophotos #macrophotography #ontarioinsect #planthoppersofinstagram #simcoeontario #norfolkwild #blognorfolk #fulgoroidea #flatidae (at Simcoe, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFjfdwJgGau/?igshid=96a6kk7gratg

Master Gardener encourages amateur to fight chemical wars. What brilliant advice! Bravissimo! The following is my translation of a quote from a blog of one of Italy's most famous gardeners, who calls himself "the Master Gardener". His own words are at the bottom of the page* "You're dealing with Metcalfa [pruinosa, commonly known as citrus flatid planthopper] a fastidious parasite, especially in its adult phase, when it is sticky. It is killed with CONFIDOR, diluted 1 centilitre to a litre. This treatment should be repeated every 10 or 15 days even if the active ingredient in the product lasts 60 days. Metcalfa is tenacious, and this is the only way to eliminate it. Best wishes, and Go Start the War!" The Master Gardener .......................................................................... War? Remember Henk Gerritsen's words about when gardening becomes a war against nature we should know that we're doing something wrong? Why would the "Master Gardener" of Italy suggest starting a chemical war with an insect which often does only slight damage to plants? 1) He sells the chemicals to kill the bugs, and 2) He sells ornamental plants and flowers which the bug is often attracted to, and in his greenhouses and gardencentre, if people see these insects on plants they might mistake them for something more harmful.
