I genuinely do think SPN was intended to be a bittersweet-yet-ultimately-happy-ending, but...
the most charitable way to read Jack becoming God as a good thing is that Chuck was a bad God because he interfered w/ everyone's free will: implicitly in something like his rule that a soul which went to Hell could never make it to Heaven, and explicitly in his manipulations of Sam & Dean. in his becoming God, Jack 1) corrects the system so people go where they "deserve" based on their choices [and in restructuring Heaven so it's not just movie-like memories] and 2) takes himself out of the picture as to not influence the choices people make, because ~free will.
on the one hand, it suggests a faith in humanity's goodness: that God doesn't need to command people but that they can make their own, good choices. on the other, the underlying assumption is the system just needs a Good Person in charge, but the system itself is never in question. there's still a God (but what's to stop Jack from becoming cruel like Chuck?). there's still a Heaven, a Hell (does anyone deserve to be trapped in Hell & tortured for eternity?). there's change, sure, but it's reformation, when it could've been something... more. which, frankly, I would never have expected for late seasons SPN, but it is revealing to see a 'keep the status quo ending' so neatly depicted.

Here's something I could see in the upcoming SNW/LD crossover. I'm not sure if the show will actually throw in a reference like this but it'd be cool.
Mariner, when she sees Una: OMG! You're Commander Chin-Riley! Number One! Our first officer has a recruitment poster of you hanging up in his office! (Mariner chuckles) He has, like the biggest crush on you.
Boimler, quietly: Uh, Mariner. I don't think he'd want her to know that.

Lest I be too hard on Kripke, considering the ideas and attitudes from other writers on the show, I did find another... interesting? revealing? instance on the commentary track from 10x10, âThe Hunter Games,â with the director / writers of / actor from the ep talking about the penultimate scene where Dean goes to see Claire, gets attacked by the couple trying to kill him, and then doesnât hurt them. Minor edits made for clarity, emphasis mine.
JOHN BADHAM [director of the ep]
This is one of the tricky scene where trying to strike a balance between [suspicion] and not making Dean look like a complete fool for setting himself up in this place.
EUGENIE ROSS-LEMMING [writer of the ep]
Although I would argue that even if he suspected danger, he was willing to put himself in a dangerous spot as penance.
BADHAM
Hmm, ok.
ROSS-LEMING
I mean, he wasâ he figured he had to make good and he was going to do whatever it took, to some degree.
BRAD BUCKNER [writer of the ep]
As in this moment, when Samâs words resonate with him, that he has to control it himself to a certain degree.
CURTIS ARMSTRONG [actor in the ep; Metatron]
Thatâs great.
ROSS-LEMMING
I mean, the only way to really get rid of the Mark is to best the Mark through inner powerâ yes, there are spells, incantations, but inner strength is really the answer. I meanâ this is a lame example, but you know, some people survive chemotherapy better than others. Itâs the same drug, but some have more personal spirit and fortitude to face that ordeal, so the cure lies within you, to some degree, is I think what weâre saying here.
Ross-Lemming does say her example isnât the best, so Iâll give her that, but the analogy of recovering from illness as connected to inner strength is still a fascinating leap. the idea that someone would struggle with chemo because they lacked the inner spirit to deal with it, not because chemo has some nasty side-effects and cancer treatment can be really difficult even when it does work. Iâm not even entirely against the idea of inner strength as important, but the frame of personal fortitude as thee thing in dealing with a painful & hard situation is... not my thing. reminds me a bit of a recent video I watched on liberal vs. conservative on the politics of pain, and the question of whether pain is something to avoid or something one just had to deal with.
In being more thoughtful with how Iâm referencing other peopleâs work in my thinking over the Mark of Cain arc, Iâve taken a step back to build out an annotated bibliography. The list below includes fandom meta / posts, along with other non-fandom sources, some of which Iâll be directly citing and some I wanted to include as just being generally influential for me & in the back of my mind as Iâve been thinking over all this. In my trying to grapple with the Mark of Cain and later seasons of the show, plus just as someone whoâs inclined to gather as much info as she can & soak in a broad context of something when thinking about it, Iâve ended up reading thru a lot of great posts and insightful past & recent discussions. Since my intent is to expand on previous conversations in fandom, even coming to this topic a while after the fact, I need to then cite othersâ work & thoughts as my jumping off points.
Iâve used MLA format and taken just a few creative liberties (hyperlinked urls, and added descriptions for posts without titles for context). The first section is fandom and canon-related sources. The second part is non-fandom posts, books, etc., some of which Iâve come to thru meta and others Iâve discovered thru my own research & websurfing. Included are my major points of take away & occasional questions / broad thoughts. I plan to keep updating both these lists as I go along. [ETA as of 9/3: added new sources.]
Also, if any OPs listed here want me to cite them differently or even not at all for whatever reason, just let me know. Iâve erred on the side of being more comprehensive about references here, treating everything like itâs a âformal source,â from published books to longer form meta essays to one off tumblr posts, but Iâm less sure abt fandom norms around meta vs shorter posts.

mainstream / status quo ideas about abuse: that itâs heroic to fight against an abusive situations and conversely not heroic to submit to or obey an abuser; âgoodâ vs âbadâ victims
how this ties back into Sam rebelling against John vs. Dean complying with John; also related to âstrongâ vs. âweakâ dichotomy; how that framing gets reflected in fandom conversations (and somewhat the show too?)
the Markâs scary, overkill violence often being triggered by Deanâs defending himself, with this pattern not explicitly acknowledged within the show

For him, it was no different. He didnât see Amy as a human being; he just saw her as a problem that was going to get worse. As a protector, Dean needed to get Amy out of the way. It was sad because I donât think he wanted to do it, he just had to.â

litterae-ignotae, antigonewinchester. âUntitled (Mary & Bela parallels, incest in SPN). Tumblr, 5th May 2022.
discussion of hunting, particularly in the Kripke era, as an idea that evokes incest (isolation, secrecy, complicity) even if one doesnât read those relationships as literally incestuous
Does this lens apply to / is it still useful for looking at later seasons? Hunting does somewhat shift thematically in s8 after the intro of the Men of Letters, but there still seem to be threads related to Dean here, like in 9x16 w/ Magnus, 9x19 w/ Alex. Also sort of with Crowleyâs altar boy âjokeâ in 11x02?

âIt was an interesting quandary because she was Deanâs daughter and perhaps his DNA could have made her overcome her other DNA. She might have taken after her father! fandom trends of criticizing Dean for his anger in When the Levee Breaks, Point of No Return in his fights with Sam, Cas and then romanticizing his forgiveness / being there for Sam & Cas in Swan Song, Goodbye Stranger
Is this framing still as much of a fandom pattern in 2022? But perhaps relevant to the writing of the show at the time in 2014/2015. Also how this plays with Colette: a beautiful unconditionally loving wife whoâs always forgiving including uhhh *checks notes* after being fatally stabbed by her husband Cain.

riversdark. âUntitledâ (Sam, Cas and Colette parallels). Tumblr, 30 Sept 2021.
the Cas = Colette parallel can work but ultimately itâs because of Sam that Dean is able overcome the Mark, not Cas
Sam is one who pulls Dean back from violence several times over seasons 9 & 10, while Cas doesnât, including in 10x22 when Cas tells Dean to âstopâ ala Colette and Dean just beats him up more because of it
swayingwires. âYouâre Gonna Have to Let Me Grow Up: the campaign to rescue Samâs image in five easy steps.â A03. 8th Oct â 10th Dec, 2016.
the parentified dynamic between Sam & Dean, esp around Sam viewing Deanâs mistrust as him being bossy or controlling instead of having valid issues
the narrative pattern of blame shifting, where Samâs actions & their consequences will get framed as partially Deanâs fault because he reacted badly / didnât trust Sam / didnât do X right
Deanâs narrative role being to âpreserve the Familyâ and either being cheered or condemned for doing so
Imo the dynamics laid out in this essay explain A Lot about the writing in season 5 & beyond, and feel particularly relevant to how season 10 plays out. Also once you see it, you can find ppl in fandom uncritically replicating this framing (Dean & his reactions as responsible for Samâs behavior) all the time đ¤Â

Iâve also read differing opinions on Yanagihara; this is only one pov on her books. Also havenât read A Little Life myself, which Iâd need to do to form my own opinion on it. However, I do wonder abt this attitude around abuse / trauma as something from the SPN writers, in terms of writing âwhat they know,â as well as a certain tone that can creep into fandom discussions around Dean. But maybe Iâm being too cynical here?

Wheeler discovered the comic entirely by accident, which meant it involved pizza, a suspiciously wobbly stack of books, and him trying to âlean back casuallyâ against a library shelf he absolutely should not have trusted.
âCheck this out,â he said, sliding into the Tree of Life like he owned the place, holding up a glossy comic book like it was contraband treasure. âThese dudes are wild.â
Kwame raised an eyebrow. âThat is printed material. Is it educational?â âItâs educational in the âI learned people can punch space godsâ kind of way,â Wheeler said, already flipping pages. âTheyâve got this whole team. Called the Avengers.â
Gi tilted her head. âWhat kind of name is Avengers?â Wheeler didnât even look up. âItâs no different to Planeteers.â A beat of silence followed. Ma-Ti blinked slowly. âThat is⌠not an answer.â âItâs a vibe, Ma-Ti,â Wheeler insisted, turning the page with dramatic flair. âSee? Theyâve got a guy whoâs a genius billionaire, a guy who turns into a giant green rage monster, a dude with a shieldââ
Linka leaned over his shoulder. âAnd they function as a team?â âYeah,â Wheeler said proudly. âWhen things get bad, they all show up andââ He cleared his throat and read aloud with sudden theatrical intensity:
âAvengers⌠Assemble!â
Gi squinted at the page. âThat is the whole strategy?â âItâs a motivational slogan!â Wheeler defended instantly. Kwame crossed his arms. âWe also have a motivational slogan.â Ma-Ti nodded. âThe power is yours.â Wheeler paused. ââŚOkay, yeah, but ours is less yelling and more inspirational PSA.â
Linka smirked. âStill effective.â Wheeler flipped another page, growing more excited. âTheyâve got flying armor, gods from space, talking treesââ Gi leaned in. âWe also have a talking tree.â Everyone slowly turned toward the nearest branch. The branch did not respond.
Ma-Ti whispered, âHe is shy.â Wheeler slammed the comic shut. âOkay, but imagine us with an intro like that. âPlaneteers⌠Assemble!ââ Kwame frowned. âWe do not assemble. We are already assembled.â Linka shrugged. âShe has a point.â Gi nodded. âWe are more⌠continuously assembled.â
Wheeler sighed. âYeah, yeah. Fine. But Iâm just sayingâif we ever get matching jackets, I call dibs on âCaptain Earth.ââ âNo,â they all said at once. Wheeler grinned anyway. âWorth a shot.â
