On the last day of 31 Days of Dick Grayson 2023, I give thee... My latest Dick Grayson fan embroideries. One based on a cover by Bruno Redondo, the other from a drawing by Chris Samnee.

Skrima sticks are Nightwing's one true love (I believe) but I do have a very firm preference when it comes to all its variants throughout the years...

Bruno Redondo's take on them is fresh, unique and most importantly FUN! It is also closely related to Dick's parents and circus background which is just adorable and a really nice touch.

The whole thing is truly really well thought out and I am really glad Bruno shared his thinking with us as well as the inner workings of comic related weaponry who more than likely lacks sense. I do also love the sort of "magnetic backpack" that goes along the sticks which makes more sense than just two sticks randomly sticking to his back...

Then, as if that wasn't enough, the sticks can be joint to make a staff and that is so much fun!

Rather than focus on the suit as a whole, I'm going to talk about specific aspects of his suits that I enjoy.

First off, I like this shape and proportion of his bird insignia. It's not too thin and not too wide.

I've always loved his large, bat-shaped belt buckle. It instantly tells you that it's Dickbats and not Bruce.

I'm obsessed with this version of his pixie boots. They look cute yet sturdy.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest #7

His claws from his Target suit were pretty cool. Don't think I'd want him to incorporate claws into his normal suit, but they were cool for this version of his suit.

Nightwing: The Target

I'm a fan of Dick's half cowl from his Renegade era. It gives him some head protection without covering up his hair.

Nightwing (Vol. 2) #115

One thing in particular I like about Dick's N52 costume during this arc is the visible stitching in his suit from where he patched it up after a fight. He's got stitches on his back too. I like that it lets us know that he's making do with the suit he has.

Nightwing (Vol. 3) #21

An addition to the current Nightwing costume that I really like is the blue soles of his boots. They break up all the black and compliment the fingerstripes nicely.

There are so many good ones to choose from, but I miss his dynamic with Roy Harper. These two characters have a long history together and no matter what way you look at them, their relationship is built on a deep foundation of love and trust.

Outsiders (2003) #1

Look at this bitch saying "I don't feel like it" that is the married couple dynamic that is sorely lacking these days. This energy carries through this whole comic run and I was there for it. The emotions are pretty raw in this one. They are both trying to heal from some traumatic stuff and its a mess and a half.

They do a whole lot of beating each other up. Roy seemed to be expecting this during this instance.

Their interactions in the Titans series are so much fun. This run has all the usual titans soap opera bullshit we all know and love.

The whole Dick helping Roy beat up his ex in a literal custody battle is such a sweet story. I don't have the panels but Roy cried over lying to Dick. Imagine Roy telling Lian this story when she's older.

Clark was born to become a father. He's a great fatherly figure to a lot of younger heroes - Dick included. However, Dick considers him as his role model, his uncle and his friend.

Meanwhile, Bruce while far from being perfect father is the person who gave Dick a home when he lost his parents. He's the one Dick considers a father. Without Bruce there would be no Robin, no superhero life for Dick. That's why I'm gonna pick him over Clark.

If I’m going to be in charge of the new DC creative team, if decided to go a different route and pick Tumblr creatives to build up a great team, to be honest there are so many better artists and authors than DC has in their arsenal, I’d love to see these fans take the reigns and make real positive changes to the Nightwing series.
