The Pleiades - Messier 45 This was the last target I was able to get before my old laptop died last November. I was able to salvage it with some stock flats and dark flats I took while trying to test a different way to take flats. I didn't like the results of those tests BUT it enabled me to salvage the hour and a half I spent on this target. Now that I am up an running again, I look forward to going after the Pleiades again this Fall! . 45 x 120s Dark, flat, dark flats and bias frames used for calibration 800 ISO - Bortle 8 . M45 - The Pleiades (aka the Seven Sisters. Subaru, Makaliʻi and more) is a star cluster in the constellation Taurus . This image combines 3 different data sets from last year plus one short session from this year. Each session was around 4 hours and I ended up with around 8.5 hours total. The data was gathered with two different telescopes at three different focal lengths, using four different filter configurations and the same camera. The images were stacked in Astro Pixel Processor (much like the Cygnus Loop from last post) and then processed using both Siril and Photoshop . Meade Series 6000 80mm Triplet APO - 2 hours at 480mm, no filter - 2 hours at 380mm, Orion Light Pollution filter - 2 hours at 380mm, Baader Skyglow-Moon IR Cut Filter . Radian Raptor 61mm - 2.5 hours at 275mm, OptoLong L-Pro filter . Pleiades by Chuck Manges
Pleiades, or the Seven Sisters (also known as Messier 45), is an open star cluster located in the constellation Taurus and is approximately 380 light years from Earth.
by: David Pickles
The Pleiades is a nearby cluster of hot blue stars which are illuminating the gas and dust between them.
It is readily visible to our eyes, even in large cities. Look to the east this evening. With an apparent size about half that of a full moon, it is quite impressive.
Countless ancient cultures documented their impressions of it. Europeans call it the “Seven Sisters”, referring to Greek mythology. The Japanese named it “Subaru”.
This is an aggregate of 46 images where each photo was a 5 minute exposure. You need long exposures to reveal the faint reflecting dust clouds.
I photographed the Pleiades Cluster from my terrace in Strasbourg France over three nights in October 2022.
