Fairy King: Marianne, please. You need to stop all ⦠this.
Marianne: You just gestured to all of me.

Soft&Fluff
Iām feeling very soft and fluffy tonight.Ā
WELP, time to dive into others masterlists.Ā
Iām also open for roleplays over on @mersang :)
Regarding what to call Dagda now that Marianne is Queen: according to Wikipedia, a monarch who has abdicated technically loses the use of their title, but out of politeness may still be addressed as 'Your Majesty'. Probably, to avoid confusion over who is in charge, Dagda would revert back to whatever title he had before becoming king. ("Sir Dagda"? I think you said he was a knight?) ~Mersang
Thatās right, I did say he was a Knight! I had to go back and check, sometimes I forget certain details of my writing XD
I feel like Dagda would occasionally get Your Majesty from courtiers (especially those who are resistant to the changes Marianneās ruling will bring), but I also really enjoy the head canon that the goblins would take to calling him The Queenās Father, since Griselda would go by The Kingās Mother Ā and they donāt see how that would be any different =)Ā

Fans might misinterpret a character based on you as having no further ambitions, since you have a good job you love and a large internet following. (Sorry if this sounded mean - you're a nice person, so misinterpretations probably would be a bit mean. The "too good to be true, therefore suspicious" trope is pretty strong.) ~Mersang
No, this makes complete sense! And honestly, itās VERY ironic that you say this, becauseā¦I feel like Iām filled with nothing BUT ambitions and hopes and dreams and goals, the majority of them very much frustrated.Ā
Like, I do have a good job, and Iām very thankful for it,Ā but I want one that actually supports me and challenges me. Iāve actually been thinking a lot of stuff over in regards to how to accomplish my goals, just what it will take of me, and itās been both terrifying and exhilaratingā¦
And as for the large internet following, I am and will always remain highly baffled and extremely humbled that all of you have chosen to follow this strange, shy little bookworm. Iāve made some incredible friendships here that I wouldnāt give up for the worldā¦
Re: "Strange Magic needs more brown characters" - I know Griselda is super pale and Bog has a Scottish accent, but I always headcanon human-Bog as a black man. Maybe mixed-race, or maybe Griselda is albino as a human. It's weird seeing other people's drawings of human-Bog and he's so pale. ~Mersang
I know that @dainesanddaffodils mentioned once that she head canons Human!Bog as being mixed race and having some Romani blood in him, and Iāve gone with that idea as well.Ā
I also remember a follower of mine once had the idea of making Human!Marianne and Dawn have a Latina mother, with Dagda being from a very WASPy family, which I really really loved.Ā
We could explore the idea that Dawnās looks and coloring are more like their Fatherās side, and how Marianne used to feel a bit alienated over how dark her looks were compared to the rest of her family. When perfect WASPy looking Roland started romancing her, she began to feel acceptedā¦until Roland was Roland and made Marianne embrace her motherās heritage and culture and take ferocious pride in everything that makes her different.Ā
Honestly, I am always for more representation, so I would love to see other peopleās head canons about this!Ā
Mersang submitted:Strange Magic random observations
Some things I noticed, rewatching Strange Magic yet again:
When Bog says āBecause loveĀ is dangerousā during his opening scene, he chokes up a bit on the word āloveā. Itās easy to miss the first time because he goes back to being hissing and angry on the next word, but when you listen to it again and you know his backstory ⦠ouch.
Marianne does not actually have a scabbard. Her sword is hung from her belt with the blade totally exposed. What?
During various fight scenes, not only are surrounding colours reflected onto metal blades, but light from the blades is reflected back at the characters. Such great animation.
Look closely at Bogās face when heās flying back to the castle after seeing the army and Marianne is trying to convince him she had nothing to do with it. āI wouldnāt follow me if I were you, Princess.ā His voice is angry, but his face isĀ so sadĀ andĀ hurt.
Every time Bog and Marianne hold hands, including all three times during the 'Wild Thingā sequence, Bog reaches for her first.
Griselda never actually says she wants grandchildren, just that she wants Bog to find love.
Butterfly Bog as a mathematical equation: fairy princess + goblin king + flirty sword-fight = TRUEST LOVE.
On a different note, hereās a good way to describe writing fanfiction if you have to talk about it with people wondering why youāre doing that instead of working on your original stories: Itās a low-pressure way to refine story-telling techniques using established characters and settings, like using a cake mix instead of baking from scratch.
Ooooh, these are all so great!Ā
I truly never noticed that his voice did that! I noticed that it got especially deep, but that was about it. Iām gonna try to rewatch the movie tonight, and Iām gonna pay close attention to that scene now!Ā
Oh man, youāre right about Marianne not having a scabbard! But Roland does. Maybeā¦maybe sheās trying to set herself apart from him? On some highly symbolic level, you could say that Rolandās scabbard is akin to him hiding his true nature/dangerousness, whereas Marianne having her sword exposed is her pretty much proclaiming to the world just how dangerous she is, how sheās not hiding anything about herself. Sheās different and dangerous and if you have a problem with that, too damn bad. Sheās seeking to be as different from Roland as possible.Ā
God, the animation in this movie is just flawless. So attentive to the smallest detail, so rich and nuanced. Seriously, this movie is such a visual feast.Ā
Bogās face is so tight and closed off in that scene. Usually he bares his teeth when heās angry, like itās a show of intimidation. But in that moment, just him and her, heās keeping his pain and anger in tight, his voice an angry whisper that just barely escapes through the tight line of is mouth. He sounds and looks so incredibly betrayed, and heās trying so hard to keep it in =C
Bog does indeed reach for Marianne all those times! It really hits home Marianneās earlier words of meeting someoneĀ ā...who takes my hand, and I donāt want to hit himā¦ā Bog is showing her, consciously or not, that heās willing to trust her, and that the offer is there, and heās giving her the choice to either take his hand or not. The fact that Marianne chooses to do so each time shows how deeply she trusts him. Hands and reaching out for one another is such a huge theme in this movie, I love it so =)Ā
Yeah, Griselda wanting grandchildren is never outright said in the movie - I think itās more of a fanon thing. She just wants her son to be happy and loved again, and it really does seem to be for selfless reasons. Iāve just taken the idea that she has hopes for grandchildren into my fanfics and have run with it, and honestly, I feel a bit guilty about that at times =/Ā
Now thatās the kind of mathematical equation I can enjoy! =D
ā¦That is actually an incredible way of describing fan fiction that makes it sound quite legit indeed. I am so going to use that now!Ā Ā
