I found the gravestone to a distant ancestor of mine who died on August 12 1916 during World War One. He was a member of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and I found him just outside Menin Gate. The fact that he was 18, my age, when he died and he died on August 12 was one of the most shocking moments of my life. It was a very moving and emotional moment for me and I don’t think I’ll ever forget this. Thank you for everything you’ve done for us Edward

On Passing The New Menin Gate

Who will remember, passing through this Gate, the unheroic dead who fed the guns? Who shall absolve the foulness of their fate, - Those doomed, conscripted, unvictorious ones?
Crudely renewed, the Salient holds its own. Paid are its dim defenders by this pomp; Paid, with a pile of peace-complacent stone, The armies who endured that sullen swamp.
Here was the world's worst wound. And here with pride 'Their name liveth for ever', the Gateway claims. Was ever an immolation so belied as these intolerably nameless names? Well might the Dead who struggled in the slime Rise and deride this sepulchre of crime.

The Menin Gate memorial at Ypres was built and opened in 1927. It commemorates the British soldiers whose bodies were never found. On its huge panels are carved 54,896 names of men with no known grave who died in this area between 1914 and August 1917. The designer thought there would be plenty of room for all the names, but there was not: a further 34,984 names of missing soldiers (from August 1917 to the end of the war) are carved on panels at Tyne Cot cemetery not far away. The Menin Gate is an integral part of Ypres, and the Menin Road, along which people and traffic pass daily, runs through it.
Every night of the year, at 20.00, the road is closed while 'The Last Post', the traditional bugle call marking the end of the day for soldiers in action, is played.

The take away from yesterday’s anniversary, from all the horrors of wars past is that the grass comes back.
In World War I, the landscape of Belgium was physically reshaped by relentless bombing. More ordinance was dropped on that stretch of the planet during that war than anytime before or since.
