A big memory problem that ADHDers face cause of executive dysfunction is recall.. ie, recalling information you already know.
You have probably experienced this many times.. your friend mentions a restaurant you went to a few months ago and you are completely blank.. can’t remember anything.
Then they mention a few more details.. about the decor of the place and who else was there and BOOM, suddenly it all comes back to you.
Recall problems.
It certainly is a bigger problem for me than actually storing the information.
Now, I do have a solution for it.. and you can see it at play even in the my example.
Things are easier to remember when you have other information associated with it. Things that set it apart.
So for example, if you want to remember if you locked your front door or not, do a little dance as you lock up. Then you can think back to if you danced today or not.
Locking the door is a boring memory that is hard to recall. But awkward dancing in front of your doorsteps? You won’t forget it even if you try.
I can remember very specific things from years ago, like that one ad for a car where they say ‘itch bin Rodolphe’ that I’m seemingly the only one to remember or that song with a tiger that jump at the end from first year of middle school’s English class. Sometimes there’s a scent or a feeling that brings me back to a show i watched when I was a kid or a book or a place.
But ALSO my memory is shitty. You tell me something, if I’m not focused on it I forget the next second. Lost my sentance half-way. I’m in a room and I have no idea why. Trying to make new routines is impossible cause I keep forgetting to do the things everyday. I don’t know what I did yesterday.
Tl;dr : I have a bad memory in general but also I can remember very specific moments from years ago and I don’t know why
me: *sits down at the psychologist*
me: so
me: I don't remember what happened this week
I have a memory problem. I tend to forget where I am and can't focus on something for too long. When I see people it feels as if they've been replaced, but they act the same. They still look the same to me but they always seem off. It's like when you say a word too many times and it sounds weird. I can't tell what this is, but I was hoping you could link me to some sites to help with this, or give me some ideas of what it might be. Thank you.
Hi darling,
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been struggling with this! I can imagine that this must be very distressing for you and that you want to find out what’s going on. I do want to stress that we are in no way professionals (and we discourage self-diagnosis for the reasons listed here), so we can’t really know what you might be dealing with. We can list some options, but there will most likely more possibilities than what we suggest and some suggestions might not be right. What I’m trying to say is that it would be best for you to see a professional if you want to know for sure what’s going on! They can narrow it down with you. More importantly, after finding out what’s going on, they can look into treatment options with you so that your struggles will become less intense and more doable for you. To see a professional, you’d have to visit your GP / local doctor first and explain to them briefly what’s been going on. They’ll then be able to refer you to a professional. Since this is a memory problem, they might refer you to a neurologist to see if they can explain this. If they don’t find anything, you might get another referral to a mental health professional. Of course this will all depend on the doctors you see and it might be different where you live, but that’s my guess. Either way, it would be good to see a doctor so that you can get a referral to some kind of specialist and start the road of finding out what could be going on. If you want, you can read more about getting help here.
Something you might want to look into is dissociation. There are many forms of dissociation, ranging from depersonalisation and derealisation to blacking out completely. It sounds to me like you might be dealing with some form of derealisation. This is where you feel as if the world around you isn’t real. That isn’t exactly what you’re describing, but you are struggling with something to do with how the world and people around you feel to you, so that’s why I’m thinking of something like derealisation. Grounding techniques can be of help for that, or for any form of dissociation. We have a page with lots of different grounding techniques here. My personal favourite is the following one:
Describe 5 things you can see;
Describe 4 things you can hear;
Describe 3 things you can feel;
Describe 2 things you can smell;
Describe 1 thing you can taste.
It can take some time before you figure out which grounding techniques work for you. This might also differ depending on the situation you’re in- in one situation one grounding technique might work best while in another situation another technique might work best.
Sometimes when I’m feeling really low, I tend to be more forgetful and I feel similar to what you’re feeling. It feels like everything is off and it’s just not right. So maybe a low mood could cause this as well? Or if I struggle with low mood, I experience some form of derealisation as well (or what else it turns out to be that you’re struggling with). Either way, I want you to know that you aren’t alone! I’m sorry that I couldn’t be of more help but I hope this was at least slightly helpful still.
Sometimes what seems impossible, is just hard.
Keep fighting beautiful <3Love Pauline
