Ooh this feels so LJ, I like it. :)
Thanks to @too-antigonish for nominating me!
This is long. It is going behind the thingy.
Origin of my blog's name:
It's part of a lyric from a song I started writing some years ago and never finished (and probably never will now, as it's partly about living too far away from the sea and I literally live about a 2 minute wheelchair push away from it now ;-) ).
I'll always order this food:
We have two Chinese takeaways round the corner and they're both awesome and I'm fairly flexible except that there will be beansprouts as one of the veg things. :)
Most overused emoji:
Sparkly heart.💖 Also anything that adds up to "this".
My current comfort film/movie, show, and book
I'm not doing films much at the moment, so shockingly there isn't one! When it comes to filmed theatre though: can't go wrong with the Bridge Theatre's "Midsummer Night's Dream" from 2018, or the Royal Ballet's "Winter's Tale", and I cannot wait to rewatch the National Theatre's "Importance of Being Earnest" with Ncuti Gatwa and Sharon D. Clarke :) I will be rewatching "Knives Out" again soon though. I should watch more films tbh!
Show-wise: "Heated Rivalry" at the moment, shockingly enough. ;-) I've also started watching quite a few French-language murder mysteries to improve my skills. :D
Books: "A Taste of Gold and Iron" by Alexandra Rowland. Also all of the Watch books by Terry Pratchett. And pretty much everything by KJ Charles and Jordan L. Hawk and A.J. Demas. Nonfiction-wise, I'm gradually listening to the talking book of "Between Two Rivers" by Moudhy Al-Rashid which is just fricking beautiful.
Songs currently on repeat/on my favourite playlists:
The Fretless's cover of "My Moon My Man" (it's on Bandcamp, I recommend it so much to fellow HR fans)
about half of the Hamilton soundtrack, still
"Mountains" (Stray Kids)
about half of the Placebo album "Without You I'm Nothing"
"Father's Lullaby" (Hazel Askew/Lady Maisery)
"Worker's Song" (Dick Gaughan)
"Standing as I Do Before God" (C. McDowall, sung by Tenebrae)
"I Will Be an Angel of Peace" (Will Todd, after St John Henry Newman, sung by the Sixteen)
"Waves" (Jake Runestad, sung by Conspirare)
"Space Rabbits of Brocklevoons" (Kate Rowe)
most things by The Amazing Devil
"The Keys of Canterbury" (Show of Hands)
(yes my tastes are weird and electic and ultimately I listen to more choral music and folk than anything else. :) )
My current hyperfixation.
Heated Rivalry, surprising no one. ;-) And François Arnaud as an actor (along with all of the rest of the cast to a lesser but still important extent). And learning more French, which is not-unrelated. ;-) I continue to be highly obsessed with Shakespeare, Tolkien, Roger Allam, classical history, mediaeval history, some early modern history, nature. Choral music and folk music, as above, the morseverse, Shetland, the Accidental Warlord universe, etc. etc. etc.. I never really lose hyperfixations, they just go down to a simmer a bit. ;-) But yeah, currently Heated Rivalry and despite the Horrors in a small but loud corner of the fandom it's being lovely. :)
Oddly specific thing that brings me joy.
The seagulls nesting on the roof of my building. And the incompetent pigeons who hang out in the alcove across the road, visible from my bed. :)
What smell makes me happy?
Bog myrtle, and I haven't smelled it properly in years because the dried stuff is never good enough. Other than that, a lot of other herbs. The sea (of course). Rannoch Mor.
Something I loved as a kid and secretly do.
I don't know about secretly. ;-) Being in the dark with small pretty or glittery lights on. So, Christmas trees with only the fairy lights illuminating the room. The fun bits for kids at the Natural History Museum etc. Glitter lamps and lava lamps. I now know this is a visual stim thing, and I really want to go to somewhere with decent dark skies again one day and see a good quantity of stars. :)
Phone wallpaper right now.
Not going to share it, but it's a lovely picture of a sparrow on a branch.
Early bird or night owl.
I like being an early bird. I tend to be a night owl though. Or, which is very bad for me, both. Sleep is an issue. Since I have a fatigue-related chronic illness, that is a problem.
If you work, what is your profession and do you like it?
I'm not able to work. I'm… vaguely and slowly learning stuff about bookkeeping though, and I think if I'm ever well enough and can work for an organisation or individual I respect then I would absolutely like it. But then I also like writing and singing folk music when I can do that, so. :)
Most of my energy (other than for scary being-disabled-and-so-on admin) goes to organising online events for myself and friends. Watching theatre together, doing readthroughs over zoom. I love both the admin end of this and the rejoicing in theatre (and acting!) end of this.
I nominate @thekenobee, @epexegetical, @endeavour12345, @modernlovedespair, @amazonrhinos, @ashfae, @mostlyjustgoose, @waywren, @harperhug. But absolutely only if you'd like to! Also there are many others who I'd be delighted to see do this. :D
@petymology tagged me six long weeks ago, and the stars have finally aligned. Thanks for tagging me!
Rules: shuffle your 'on repeat' playlist and post the first 10 tracks, then tag 10 friends to do the same.
This probably works different for others. I don't use any streaming music playlists. I own my media and occasionally make playlists. 25 years ago I made mix discs. Not quite 20 years ago I got an ipod and switched to playlists longer than a mix disc. A bit over a decade ago I was really only making one or two playlists a year. I'm old, what can I say.
But I've been trying to get more modern music in my life. So here's what my music playing app in my phone (Musicolet, which I've been using for like a decade) tells me are my top played tracks.
Titus Andronicus - Titus Andronicus
Maneskin - GOSSIP
Hux's speech but it's a musical - Mialine
Once in a Lifetime - Joshua Idehen
Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl - Chappell Roan
Bleachers - I Wanna Get Better
Paul Russell - Lil Boo Thang
TikTok - Ke$ha
Nails Hair Hips Heels - Todrick Hall
You Told the Drunks I Knew Karate - Zooey Van Goey
Tagging @ckerouac, @catsofkodinsk, @mindyfromohio, @ingridverse, @chubby-elf-hux, @nkvictory, @haruatori, @kdazrael, @elljayvee but absolutely no worries.
And if I didn't tag you, consider yourself tagged if you want to play.
With some prompting from @erstwhiletexan, some films that have been significant to me! Some I think were formative and influenced my tastes/styles/writing preferences, others had a significant emotional impact, others I took something important away, and others are just plain ol' comfort watches.
In rough chronological order, films that have been an influence on me, whether formative, or incorporated into my personal lexicon

The earliest I had on my phone was from when I saw Adam Ant in 2012 (age 41), then Buffy Summers for Halloween 2015 (age 44), and recent selfie for 2019 (age 48). Phone cameras and makeup technology have improved! Can I ask you the fandom meme for the whole Kingohger team?:D if not, then just Gira and Kaguragi :D
I got distracted by a) making cookies to bring for fellow poll workers tomorrow, and b) rewatching bits of Kingohger, so it's gonna just be Gira and Kaguragi for the fandom meme (feel free to send me more. Goodness knows that I'll be able to use the distraction while waiting for election results that I'll be amazed if we get by the end of the week).
Anyway.
Gira:
First impression:
Awww, he’s good with kids, what a wholesome —HOLY CRAP DID HE JUST. IN THE THRONE ROOM. DID HE JUST SAY THAT A LEADER WHO PUTS HIMSELF ABOVE HIS PEOPLE IS GARBAGE? DID HE JUST SAY THAT IF THAT IS HOW THE “GOOD KING” HE HAS IDOLIZED BEHAVES, THEN HE WILL BE THE VILLAIN? I LOVE HIM
Impression now:
Oh gosh, I love how much he grew as a leader over the series. Probably my favorite Red out of all the sentai I’ve seen so far.
Favorite moment:
Honestly, it’s still probably that moment from the very first episode where he grabs Racules’ sword and says that his version of justice is no justice at all. I fell in love with him right then and there.
Idea for a story:
Nothing specific, but playing in the timeskip space where Gira had to figure out how to rule a country FAST sounds like fun.
Unpopular opinion:
I don’t know that I have any about him?
Favorite relationship:
I love him and Jeramie post-timeskip together, whether platonic or shippy.
Favorite headcanon:
I love the idea of Gira, post-canon, having lots of kids, whether biological or adopted. He’d be such a great dad.
Kaguragi
First impression:
Digging the aesthetics of his country, and an automatic leg up just for being king of the agricultural center. Toufu is a genuinely silly name.
Impression now:
How did they let this man be on a show whose target age is probably still working on mastering tying their shoelaces? I mean that with all fondness — characters who are working on that many levels very rarely make it into children’s media, and it’s a shame.
Favorite moment:
The reveal that he can’t be brainwashed by Hilbil because he’s constantly lying and keeping at least five different versions of reality in his head at all times.
Idea for a story:
Kaguragi (and Suzume) figuring out how to run a country, preferably with her being even more politically aware than her brother
Unpopular opinon:
Not sure how unpopular it is, but I genuinely respect the degree to which he puts his country first. There’s not a sense that any other country is self-sustaining, agriculturally, and Toufu is arguably the most important country on Chikyuu. Without it, the planet would starve.
Favorite relationship:
Kaguragi/twelve layers of plotting OTP
Favorite headcanon:
Kaguragi actually has an identical twin, who’s living his best life as a farmer in rural Toufu, far from his brother and sister’s political machinations, which he has zero interest in.
