I do want to preface I know nothing of Hollywood or its practices. Iâm also getting the writerâs list from IMDb.
That being said, Iâm pleasantly surprised to see how diverse the writerâs room is. While it would be nice if there was more diversity at the topâValerie Chu is executive story editor as of season 2, yay!âIâm glad that these women in the room.
It makes me wonder how much of the charactersâ internal biases are deliberately written and which are the writerâs biases slipping through.
ACEP25 keynote Q&A
Dr Sachs: I came on to help ER halfway through the first season. [...] from the moment I met him [Noah], I knew we had something really special. His grasp of the medicine, the procedures, and the emotion that goes along with patient care is just spot on.
Dr Herbert: Noah's knowledge of medicine is kind of stunning at this point after all these shows, we'll be sitting around and he'll come up with a diagnosis. I'm like, "how the f do you know that?" and he says, "Mel, I play a doctor on TV."
Dr Cirillo: We would love to say that you captured the spirit of surgeons incredibly well.
Noah Wyle on a panel with Dr. Mel Herbert and Dr. Joe Sachs at the ACEP25 (American College of Emergency Physicians) Scientific Assembly. Moderator is ACEP president, Dr. L. Anthony Cirillo.

âWe in emergency medicine have been in denial about the stress of the job and the burnout. When I started residency at UCLA, ER docs were burnt out. We were told that itâs because they werenât trained in emergency medicine.â
âNow we have this great training, and you watch The Pitt and itâs the real deal. But theyâre still burnt out. Thatâs because itâs a stressful job. Patients are dying.â
âAnd then you have to see the next patient, see the next. Youâre fighting a system that doesnât really give a sh*t about you, because you donât bring in as much money as elective surgery.â
[...]
âOne of the other important issues to acknowledge for emergency departments is that EDs are now managing complexity at scale. And then when the system becomes overcrowded.â
âAnd that leads to the moral injury of the healthcare workers who are constantly worried about the person in the waiting room that they donât know about yet, who has a really serious condition and is quietly sitting there, waiting to be seen.â
âThat is one of the major factors contributing to burnout and C-PTSD.â
Dr Herbert said he is proud of the effect of The Pitt.
âDoctors are getting help. Nurses are getting help. So it has had an incredible effect,â said Dr Herbert.
