Optimus can tell just how upset you are even before he lays his optics on you. He finds it unacceptable that something is making you feel at all unhappy. He lost his home and so many of his friends so he refuses to allow any harm to come to his human, regardless of if it's physical, emotional, or mental. He immediately abandons whatever task or conversation he had been in prior in order to go and scoop you up as soon as you enter the hangar he's in. You do a good job at putting on a brave face but he could smell the stress hormones practically drowning your nervous system from over a football field away. He looks you over with a frown, though he's secretly pleased when your body language becomes a little less tense as he lifts you close to his face plates. He doesn't hesitate to look after you. He never does.

Optimus behaves according to Cybertronian cultural norms more often around you and this is no exception. While some human soldiers find it unnerving, you find it comforting that he feels okay with being himself a little more. His engine purrs soothingly as he holds you and very, very gently nuzzles his cheek against you. He takes the opportunity to smell you up close, unashamed with the way that he's sniffing you and practically luxuriating in the scent of your skin and the cute human made fragrances that adorns it. He carries you to a more secluded area of the base, away from prying eyes and optics, as he begins trying to make you feel even just a little bit better.

He sits down and gently holds you against his chest plate, letting you listen to the sound of his spark pulsing and internal machinery whirring. He uses a massive digit to pet the back of your head, occasionally and exceptionally carefully scratching behind your ear. He loves it when you rub behind his audials and wants you to feel that same relaxing sensation. He rubs circles on your back, delicately trying to relax you further against him. He rumbles in Cybertronian at you for a while, cooing at you and promising that he loves you and will keep you safe and protected forever, not that you'd be able to understand what he's saying. Eventually, he switches back to English.

“It is alright, little one. You are safe, I assure you. Please, let it all out and tell me what troubles you.” He murmurs affectionately.

It isn't even a moment after that that you burst into tears. He continues to lovingly hold you and while he doesn't enjoy how sad you are, he adores how you press yourself harder against his plating and cling to him like a lifeline. There isn't much more that Optimus likes than being a safe space for his precious favorite human. Once your sobs die down and you tell him about all of the things that upset you, he lifts you up again to optic level, cradling you for a moment as he admires your tearstained face.
