Magnus keeps their relationship largely seperate from his professional life, and doesn't advertise the fact that they are together. A part of it is his military professionalism lasting well after the war, but secretly? After not being able to be together because of the war and being apart for so long with no idea if the other was dead, Magnus wants Hot Rod as much to himself as is possible. Telling the other autobots and wreckers might mean them intruding on their time together.

He knows that can't possibly last forever, but nonetheless he wants to maintan it for as long as possible.

Besides, Magnus rationalizes that keeping their relationship a secret is potentially better for Hot Rods racing career and his own duties in the government.

Naturally fanfiction induced drama must occur and Hot Rod doesn't quite see it the same way Ultra Magnus does. Instead, feeling like Magnus may, potentially, be embarrassed or ashamed of being seen with him. Or else still being hung up on the differences in rank they held in the military. However, he largely uses this as fuel for his racing. On some level thinking that if he becomes an accomplished racer, Magnus will have something to be proud of in him.

Tbh I probably wouldn't make this the center of a fanfic plot. Rather I imagine a plot where Bulkhead, Wheeljack, and Ultra Magnus reunite after the war and start doing some detective work into something criminal going on on Cybertron. Slowly them learning more about what they've been doing since the end of the war with Magnus keeping his relationship with Hot Rod a secret for as long as possible only for Hot Rod to get involved before the end.

Lol i imagine the following exchange where Ultra Magnus makes it back to their apartment super late with Wheeljack and Bulkhead in tow. Only for Hot Rod to pull that thing where he was siting in a chair in the dark and dramatically turns on a light like a wife waiting up for her cheating husband;

Hot Rod: You're investigating an incredibly dangerous criminal enterprise that threatens to destroy everything we've built and throw us once more into war!? Ultra Magnus: Hot Rod I can explain! Hot Rod: WITHOUT ME!?
