Postcard announcing solo U.S. tour dates for Marty Willson-Piper of The Church, postmarked January 25, 1990.
I love the photo gracing the front of this postcard. It really captures the energy that Marty Willson-Piper brings to a live performance... which of course is what is being advertised in this postcard I received near the beginning of 1990.
Like his bandmate in The Church, Steve Kilbey, Marty Willson-Piper was also promoting a solo album that year via a series of U.S. tour dates. I'd managed to make a solo trip into the big city to see MWP perform at a free, outdoor concert when I was just fifteen, one of my live rock music experiences outside of a venue the size of a football stadium. From there on, I was hooked: on MWP's music, on intimate live performances, and on putting myself in new and unfamiliar situations in order to recapture that feeling.
This postcard provided a map of many possibilities, specific destinations that might have friendlier admittance policies for underage music enthusiasts. I'd gotten kicked out of The Rat before (for being underage), right after The Cavedogs did their sound check. So I was not feeling great about my chances of being able to attend that Boston date. But hey, look at those NYC-area dates. Wheels in my head began turning...
And that's how I ended up at the Port Authority Bus Station in New York City on the night of February 7, 1990, calling the number of two family friends who I'd hoped would let me stay with them so I could go to the Marty Willson-Piper gig the next night. I'd cut out of school early that day to hop on a bus from Boston headed to New York, all without telling anyone, most of all my parents.
My genius/terrible plan worked, and I WAS able to go to the show and it WAS amazing... and totally worth the severe grounding I ended up getting from my parents. (And yes, I did also call them when I got to New York, because even as a sullen teen, I wasn't a total asshole.) That was also my very first time experiencing the magic of that late, great venue, Maxwells. *Sniffle*
Two days later—grounding be damned!—I naturally attempted to get another fix of live MWP by again trying my sound check-sneak-in method at The Rat. I did make my way inside, but just as I was warming up to my conversation with the ever-gracious Mr. Willson-Piper, I was quickly spotted and booted by club security.
Cue music: Ba-ba, ba-ba-ba, Melancholy Girrrlll...

I know nothing about the Maxwells but the Anon ask on @pickledchickenetti blog definitely got my attention. Google brought me to @duggardata and HOLY FUCK. I don’t know if this astounding bullshit makes me want to learn more or less about them.
