The Caldwell's didn't single handedly strike down welfare options in Arkansas. AR DHS still offers these benefits. The Caldwell's just won't take them.

but these people, who, i would assume based on the demographic of fundie snarkers, consider themselves progressive liberals, are showing the same lack of understanding about welfare programs as ultraconservatives: they are actually difficult to get approved for in any substantial way.

People are told to sell their vehicle to have cash for groceries before being denied assistance. Or being approved for $17 a month in SNAP. You have to submit proof of applications and attend job fairs if you are using unemployment benefits. Welfare programs are not guardian angles that swoop in with no strings attached full support in your time of need. They operate like any other US government agency, for better and for worse.

I heard a thing a couple years back that has never left me and it was like "conservatives will consider you an ally if you have one thing in common; liberals will consider you an enemy if you disagree on one thing". i know the Christian rebuttal is like it's not their responsibility if someone is being dishonest, just like it's not on the church to examine how its system attracts and allows horrors, they really love a complete avoidance of responsibility for sure.
