Pre-Columbian jade maskette (900/600 BCE)
Maskette
1906 brown filly by Disguise, out of Biturica
Maskette was one of the greatest fillies ever seen on an American racetrack. She was undefeated when racing fillies and extremely competitive against males
She was trained by Hall of Famer James G Rowe, Sr. In 1908, although she started late in the season, she won five of her six races, finishing second once. Among her conquests were the Spinaway Stakes in track record time, the Matron Stakes, the Great Filly Stakes, and the Belmont Futurity against colts. In her only defeat of the year, she ran second to Champion Juvenile Colt Sir Martin in the Flatbush Stakes. Maskette earned Champion Juvenile Filly honors for her trouble
She replicated her record at three, five wins from six starts. She thoroughly whipped her fellow fillies in the Alabama Stakes, Gazelle Handicap, Ladies Stakes, and Mermaid Stakes, and took out competing colts in the Pierrepoint Handicap. Her one loss came when she was second to Firestone in the Aqueduct Handicap. She was again named the champion of her division
Maskette struggled at four, winning only two of her five starts. She nevertheless set a track record at Aqueduct and finished second behind Champion Older Male King James in the Sheepshead Bay Handicap
Retired to broodmare duty, Maskette produced just one foal, a filly, on American soil before she was sold to William Vanderbilt and shipped to France. Her American filly either died or went unregistered. In France, she produced seven foals, six fillies and a single colt. Four of them found success in stakes races
Maskette died in 1930 at the age of 24. She was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2001
