The Contingency Clause
Pairing: Jack Abbot x Fem!Reader
Word Count: 2,428
Summary: Jack Abbot thought marrying you would finally retire the backup husband clause. Unfortunately, John Shen has been reclassified as a contingency, your bridesmaid Mara has expressed interest, and Jack is about to discover that setting up your best friend on a date does not, in fact, remove him from your marriage. It just means you spend the entire night emotionally chaperoning from the couch.
Warnings: newlywed fluff, suggestive content, implied sex, comedic jealousy but not real jealousy, matchmaking, best friend Shen chaos, Jack being emotionally competent and sexually inconvenienced, no use of y/n
Author's Note: The Clause Saga continues because apparently marriage was not enough to stop John Shen from being a recurring presence in Jack Abbotâs intimate life. This one is silly, soft, newlywed, and deeply unserious in the best way. Featuring post-sex conspiracy, marriage mart allegations, dowry negotiations, best friend anxiety, and Jack trying very hard to get his wife back from the emotional group chat. As always, thank you for loving these two and their increasingly unhinged extended universe.

Jack was beginning to understand why people made such poor decisions on honeymoons.
Not that this was technically a honeymoon anymore. That had ended two weeks ago, along with the ocean-view balcony, the room service breakfasts, and the luxury of pretending the rest of the world did not exist outside the precise radius of your hand on his skin.
But this was close enough.
The sheets were tangled around your hips. Your wedding ring caught faintly in the low light every time your fingers moved over his chest. One of your legs was still hooked lazily over his, and Jackâs hand rested warm and possessive against the small of your back, not because he needed to keep you there.
Because he liked you there.
You were quiet in the soft, dangerous way you got when you were thinking too hard.
Jack should have known better. He was a physician. He worked in emergency medicine. He had been trained to recognize warning signs.
Instead, he kissed the top of your head and let his eyes close.
That was his first mistake.
âDo you remember Mara?â you asked.
Jack hummed, still half caught in the warm, satisfied weight of you. âYour bridesmaid?â
You traced a lazy line over his sternum. âYeah. She asked about John at the wedding.â
Jackâs hand stopped on your back.
For one full second, nothing moved.
Then Jack opened his eyes.
You did not look at him right away.
That was how he knew it was on purpose.
You kept your cheek against his chest, kept your body warm and soft along his side, kept your voice light, as if you had not just dragged John Shen into his bed.
Jack stared at the ceiling. âNo.â
You lifted your head, blinking with entirely too much innocence. âNo, what?â
Jack repeated, âNo.â
Your mouth twitched. âI havenât asked anything.â
Jack inhaled slowly. âYou said John.â
You tilted your head. âI said Mara asked about John.â
Jack looked down at you. âIn bed.â
You glanced around the room as if checking your location.
Jack slowly turned his head and looked down at you.
You smiled.
There it was.
The trap.
The sweet face. The soft eyes. The naked shoulder tucked under his hand like you had not just committed marital treason with perfect timing.
Jack exhaled through his nose. âYou waited to tell me this information until I was naked and vulnerable.â
Your eyebrows lifted. âVulnerable?â
Jack nodded once. âYes.â
You smiled wider. âYou were very confident five minutes ago.â
Jack said, âI was seduced into a state of bliss.â
Your voice went bright with amusement. âSeduced?â
Jack narrowed his eyes. âDo not look pleased with yourself.â
You pressed your palm more fully over his chest. âIâm your wife. Iâm allowed to seduce you.â
Jack said, âNot as a prelude to Shen-related intelligence.â
A laugh slipped out of you before you could stop it. You dropped your forehead against his chest, your shoulders shaking.
Jack looked down at you, wounded and unmoved. âThis is not funny.â
You said against his skin, âItâs a little funny.â
Jackâs hand slid higher up your back anyway, holding you closer while he sounded deeply betrayed. âIt is not. It is calculated.â
You lifted your head again. âI just thought it was interesting.â
Jack frowned. âYou weaponized intimacy.â
You gasped. âI did not.â
Jack said, grave and betrayed, âYou did. You used your feminine wiles to lower my defenses.â
You laughed against his chest. âMy feminine wiles?â
Jack nodded once. âHighly effective. Deeply unethical.â
You replied, much too pleased with yourself, âYou loved my feminine wiles ten minutes ago.â
Jack closed his eyes. âThat is not the point.â
You propped your chin on him, looking entirely too delighted. âWhat is the point?â
Jack opened his eyes again. âThe point is that my wife waited until I was naked, satisfied, and emotionally compromised to bring up John Shen.â
You tried to bite back a smile.
Jack caught it immediately. âDonât smile. Iâm a victim.â
You said, âYou are not a victim.â
Jack said, âI am. Of a post-sex conspiracy.â
That did it.
You laughed properly then, warm and bright, folding yourself against him while Jack lay there with one arm around you and all the injured dignity of a man who had just realized marriage had not protected him from Shen-related administrative nonsense.
If anything, marriage seemed to have given you new legal confidence.
Jack turned his head and kissed your shoulder because he was weak.
You softened immediately, your laughter quieting against his chest.
Jack kissed you again, slower that time, his mouth lingering on your skin. âI was having a very good night.â
You said, âYouâre still having a good night.â
Jack corrected, âI was. Now Iâm discussing Shen.â
You corrected him, âYouâre discussing Mara.â
Jack sighed. âI am discussing Mara because Mara apparently asked about Shen.â
You smiled. âShe did.â
Jackâs hand resumed its slow path along your spine despite himself. âAsked what?â
Your face changed.
It was subtle, but Jack caught it.
Amusement, yes. Mischief, definitely. But something else too.
Something hopeful.
You said, âShe asked who he was. At the reception.â
Jack watched you. âA lot of people asked who Shen was.â
You said, âNot like that.â
Jackâs eyes narrowed slightly. âDefine not like that.â
You bit your lip.
He stared at you.
You smiled. âYouâre interested.â
Jack said, âI am not interested.â
You replied, âYou asked for clarification.â
Jack shrugged. âI am gathering context.â
You grinned. âYouâre naked and gathering context.â
Jack exhaled slowly. âThat is irrelevant.â
You said, âIt feels relevant.â
Jack sighed and looked back at the ceiling. âWhat did she say?â
You shifted, folding your arms over his chest and resting your chin there. The movement dragged the sheet lower over your back. Jackâs eyes flicked down before he could stop them.
You noticed.
Your smile turned smug.
Jack pointed at you. âDo not use that against me.â
You asked, âUse what?â
Jack answered, âBeing beautiful while making my life difficult.â
Your expression softened before the mischief returned. âYou think Iâm beautiful?â
Jack gave you a flat look. âYou are my wife. We are not litigating that at this hour.â
You grinned up at him. âYouâre sweet.â
Jack corrected, âI am persecuted.â
You said, âYouâre dramatic.â
Jack replied, âI am accurate.â
You laughed softly and tapped your fingers once against his chest. âMara asked if he was single.â
Jack went still again.
You watched him, your eyes brightening. âOh.â
Jack said nothing.
You said, delighted, âOh, baby. You are interested.â
Jackâs jaw shifted. âI am not.â
You said, joyfully, âYou went quiet.â
Jack shrugged. âI was processing.â
You replied, pressing your lips together, âYou were plotting.â
Jack said, âI was not plotting.â
You nodded. âYou absolutely were.â
Jack looked down at you. âMara asked if Shen was single?â
You pointed at him. âThat. That right there.â
Jack asked, âWhat?â
You answered, âThat is your plotting voice.â
Jackâs brow furrowed. âI do not have a plotting voice.â
You said, âYou do. It sounds exactly like your doctor voice, except more husband.â
Jack stared at you. âMore husband.â
You nodded solemnly. âVery attractive. Very concerning.â
He should not have liked that.
He liked it anyway.
Jack looked away first. âWhat else did she say?â
You grinned like you had caught him. âShe said he had intense divorced professor energy.â
Jack was quiet.
You laughed. âThat one got you.â
Jack said, âIt is unfortunately specific.â
You shrugged. âShe meant it as a compliment.â
Jack replied, âI assumed.â
You settled your cheek against his chest again. âShe texted me this morning.â
Jackâs eyes moved back to yours. âThis morning.â
You nodded. âSheâs going to be in town next weekend.â
Jack said, âAnd you waited until now to mention it.â
You smiled. âYou were busy earlier.â
Jack lifted his eyebrows. âI was busy?â
You said sweetly, âWith husband things.â
For one dangerous second, Jack forgot to be annoyed.
Your smile softened, and your hand moved over his chest again, slower this time, affectionate instead of strategic.
Then you added, âAlso, youâre more agreeable after sex.â
Jackâs eyebrows lifted.
You patted his chest. âUsually.â
Jack caught your wrist gently. âSweetheart.â
You asked, âWhat?â
Jack looked down at you. âIf this is you admitting you slept with me to soften me up for a Shen conversationââ
You grinned. âI slept with you because youâre hot, and I married you.â
Jack paused.
His mouth twitched despite himself.
You added, âThe Shen conversation was a bonus.â
Jack exhaled through his nose. âThat was almost sweet.â
You corrected him, âIt was mostly sweet.â
Jack frowned. âIt ended with Shen.â
You said, âMost things do.â
Jack stared at you.
You immediately lifted a finger. âKidding.â
Jackâs eyes narrowed. âAre you?â
You kissed his chest. âMostly.â
He groaned quietly and let his head fall back against the pillow.
You smiled into his skin, pleased with yourself, then settled more fully over him like you belonged there.
You did.
That was the problem.
You belonged there so completely that Jack could not even perform his own annoyance properly.
His hand stayed on your back. His thumb moved absently over your spine. His body remained loose and warm beneath yours, even while his brain tried to assemble a reasonable objection to his wife using newlywed afterglow to introduce a matchmaking proposal involving John Shen.
Jack finally asked, âWhat exactly are you suggesting?â
You lifted your head. âI didnât suggest anything.â
Jack said, âMara is single.â
You nodded once. âYes.â
Jack continued, âShe asked if Shen was single.â
You confirmed, âYes.â
Jack sighed. âShe is coming into town next weekend.â
You said again, âYes.â
Jack looked at you. âAnd you brought this up while draped over me naked because you had no agenda.â
Your smile widened. âI love when you summarize.â
Jack gave you a look.
You sighed, giving up the performance of innocence with very little regret. âI think we should set them up.â
Jack closed his eyes. âThere it is.â
You shrugged. âShe liked him.â
Jack replied, âShe spoke to him for eight minutes at our wedding.â
You said, âAnd then asked about him.â
Jack frowned. âThat could indicate concern.â
You pinched him lightly.
Jack opened one eye. âAssaulting me will not make this sound less suspicious.â
You said, âShe thought he was interesting.â
Jackâs brow furrowed. âHe is interesting in the way a locked filing cabinet is interesting.â
You laughed. âJack.â
Jack asked, âWhat?â
You sighed. âYou like him.â
Jack shut his eye again. âI tolerate him because he is important to you.â
You replied, âThatâs how it started.â
Jack groaned. âIt is still mostly that.â
You hummed, unconvinced.
Jack kept his eyes closed because if he looked at you, you were going to see too much.
Unfortunately, you already knew him.
You said softly, âBaby.â
Jackâs hand stilled on your back.
There it was.
The shift.
The little opening in the room where the joke made space for something quieter.
You said, âYou know he was never actually my backup, right? Not like that.â
Jack opened his eyes and looked at you.
Your expression was soft now. No teasing. No trap. No feminine wiles currently being deployed for strategic purposes.
Just you, warm against him, your wedding ring brushing his skin.
Jack said, âI know.â
You searched his face. âYou do?â
Jack replied, âI married you.â
Your mouth curved gently. âThat is a strong argument.â
Jack said, âIt is the strongest argument.â
You smiled, but your eyes stayed careful on him. âThen why do you care so much?â
Jack looked at you for a second too long.
Then he looked at the ceiling.
You waited.
He hated that you knew to wait.
Jack exhaled. âHe took care of you before I could.â
The words came out quieter than he meant them to.
Your smile faded into something tender.
Jack kept his eyes up, focused on the faint shadow where the ceiling met the wall. It was easier that way.
Easier than looking directly at your face while he said the thing that had been sitting in him longer than he wanted to admit.
Jack said, âHe showed up. He got you out of that terrible date. He fed you. He sat with you when you thought love was a scam and you were going to be alone forever.â
You breathed out softly. âJack.â
Jack continued, his mouth twitching despite himself, âHe gave you a plan. A terrible plan. A deeply unromantic, legally questionable, Notes app plan.â
You laughed under your breath.
Jack looked back down at you then.
Jack said, âBut he gave you something to hold onto when you needed it. And then he helped me marry you.â
Your eyes went glassy.
Jackâs thumb moved once against your back. âHe sat across from me with a folder and tabs and a complete disregard for my sanity because you asked him.â
Your expression softened even more.
Jack swallowed once, then added, âSo if someone looked at him at our wedding and thought, âThat one,â then yes. I care.â
You were quiet for a second.
Then you smiled, small and unbearably fond. âYou want him to be happy.â
Jack sighed. âI want the backup husband clause retired.â
You said, âJack.â
Jack admitted, âAnd I want him to be happy.â
Your face did something dangerous then.
Something soft and emotional and entirely too loving.
Jack pointed at you. âDo not cry while naked on top of me. Iâm not strong enough for that.â
You laughed, but it came out a little wet.
Jack slid his hand up to the back of your neck and tugged you down until your mouth met his. The kiss was gentle at first, just warmth and pressure and your smile against his, but then you softened into him, and Jack forgot for a moment what the argument had been.
That was, apparently, his second mistake.
You pulled back just enough to look at him.
You asked, smiling softly, âSo weâre setting him up?â
Jack sighed. âWe are making one introduction.â
Your grin appeared immediately. âA real date?â
Jackâs eyes closed. âI walked into that.â
You said, âYou did.â
Jack opened one eye. âNo Shen talk during sex.â
You laughed. âObviously.â
Jack pointed at you. âOr immediately after.â
You considered.
Jackâs eyes narrowed. âSweetheart.â
You smiled. âDefine immediately.â
Jack rolled you underneath him in one smooth motion, bracing himself above you as your laughter broke warm and bright beneath him.
Jack said, âIâll give you something else to think about.â
Your arms slid around his neck, your ring cool against his skin, your smile turning soft and wicked all over again.
Jack kissed you before you could say another word.
For once, blessedly, it was not about Shen.
The next day, at two in the morning, Jack had decided there were several problems with the plan.
The first problem was that it involved Shen.
The second problem was that it involved Shenâs feelings, which were historically difficult to identify, harder to discuss, and frequently disguised as administrative concerns.
The third problem was that you looked far too pleased with yourself for someone standing under fluorescent lights in the middle of an emergency department.
Jack noticed that part first.
You were beside him at the nursesâ station with a chart tucked under one arm and your coffee in your other hand, your mouth curved in a smile that would have looked innocent to anyone who had not been married to you for two weeks and in love with you for significantly longer.
Jack knew better.
You were not innocent.
You were caffeinated and plotting.
Across the station, Shen sat at the corner computer with his own coffee beside his keyboard, one hand on the mouse, his expression neutral enough to suggest he already knew something was wrong.
Jack glanced down at you. âDonât smile like that.â
You looked up at him. âLike what?â
Jack lowered his voice. âLike this was your idea.â
You smiled wider. âIt was my idea.â
Jackâs eyes narrowed. âThatâs the problem.â
You leaned a little closer to him. âYou agreed to it.â
Jack kept his attention on Shen. âI agreed to one introduction.â
You tapped your chart lightly against your hip. âYou agreed to a date.â
Jack looked at you. âUnder duress.â
You blinked at him. âYou were not under duress.â
Jackâs expression stayed flat. âI was naked and vulnerable.â
You pressed your lips together.
Jack pointed at you. âDo not laugh at me in my emergency department.â
You lifted one hand. âIâm not laughing.â
Jack watched your face. âYou are internally laughing.â
You touched his forearm. âI love you.â
Jack exhaled through his nose. âThat is not a denial.â
You squeezed his arm once. âNo, but it is true.â
Jack let that sit in his chest for exactly one second longer than he meant to.
Then he looked back toward Shen, who had not turned around but had gone suspiciously still.
Jack knew that stillness.
Shen was listening.
Jack lowered his voice. âHe knows.â
You followed his gaze. âHe does not know.â
Jack shook his head. âHe absolutely knows.â
You looked at the back of Shenâs head. âHe has not even looked at us.â
Jack kept staring at Shen. âThat is how I know he knows.â
At the corner computer, Shen clicked his mouse once.
Jack called across the nursesâ station, âDunkin.â
Shen did not turn around. âNo.â
You brightened immediately. âWe havenât asked anything yet.â
Shen kept his eyes on the screen. âYou approached as a married unit.â
Jackâs jaw tightened.
You looked delighted. âA married unit?â
Shen clicked his mouse again. âCoordinated body language. Shared agenda. Excessive eye contact before approach.â
Jack looked down at you. âI told you.â
You ignored him and stepped closer to the counter. âJohn.â
Shen finally turned his chair halfway around. His gaze moved from your face to Jackâs, then back again. Shen folded his hands in his lap. âThis is an intervention.â
You shook your head. âIt is not an intervention.â
Jack crossed his arms. âIt might become one.â
You turned and looked at him.
Jack lifted one hand. âDepending on how difficult he decides to be.â
Shen sat back. âI am already opposed.â
You stared at him. âYou donât know what this is.â
Shen looked at you calmly. âYou used my full first name.â
You frowned. âI always use your first name.â
Shen shook his head once. âNot in that tone.â
Jack looked between you. âWhat tone?â
Shenâs eyes shifted to Jack. âManagement.â
Your mouth fell open. âManagement?â
Shen nodded once. âSoft management.â
Jack looked down at you. âHeâs not wrong.â
You pointed at Jack. âDo not side with him this early.â
Jackâs brow lifted. âThis early?â
Shen looked between you. âThere are phases?â
You smiled. âOnly if you make them necessary.â
Shenâs expression remained perfectly still. âI decline.â
You leaned your hip against the counter. âYou cannot decline before I invite you.â
Shen picked up his coffee. âI am conserving time.â
Jack looked at him. âYou are being dramatic.â
Shen turned his attention to Jack with grave calm. âYou say that often when I am correct.â
Jackâs eyes narrowed. âDunkin.â
Shen tilted his head. âYes, Abbot?â
Jack opened his mouth.
You touched Jackâs wrist before he could answer, smiling sweetly at Shen. âMara is going to be in town next weekend.â
For one second, Shen did not move.
Then he blinked.
Jack watched the movement carefully.
There it was.
Not interest.
Not yet.
Recognition.
Shen knew exactly who Mara was.
You saw it too. Jack could tell by the way your fingers tightened once against his wrist.
Shenâs expression remained composed. âMara.â
You smiled. âMy bridesmaid.â
Shen set his coffee down with care. âThe one who asked if I was always like that.â
Jackâs mouth twitched.
You nodded. âThat one.â
Shen looked toward the ambulance bay doors as if considering escape. âShe seemed observant.â
You moved closer to the counter. âShe asked about you after the wedding.â
Shenâs gaze moved to Jack.
Jack immediately disliked that look.
Jack pointed at him. âNo.â
Shen turned fully in his chair. âSo it begins.â
Jack closed his eyes. âDo not.â
You looked between them, delighted already. âWhat begins?â
Shen lifted his chin. âMy season.â
Jack opened his eyes. âYour what?â
Shenâs voice turned solemn. âMy entrance into society.â
You slapped a hand over your mouth.
Jack stared at him. âAbsolutely not.â
Shen looked at you. âI assume my dance card has already been prepared.â
You lowered your hand just enough to speak. âYour dance card?â
Shen nodded. âIf I am to be placed upon the marriage mart, I should know how many eligible bridesmaids have been informed of my prospects.â
Jack dragged one hand down his face. âYou are not being placed upon the marriage mart.â
Shen looked back at Jack. âThen why are you and your wife standing before me like ambitious parents with a daughter to unload before the family fortune collapses?â
You made a strangled sound.
Jack pointed at you. âDo not encourage this.â
You pressed your lips together and nodded.
Shen folded his hands. âI see the strategy.â
Jackâs voice went flat. âThere is no strategy.â
Shen ignored that completely. âYou secured the primary marriage and now seek to eliminate the contingency.â
Jack pointed at him. âI knew you were going to say that.â
Shen nodded once. âBecause it is obvious.â
Jack leaned one hand on the counter. âIt is ridiculous.â
Shenâs gaze did not move. âIt is politically sound.â
You whispered, âPolitically sound.â
Jack looked down at you. âDo not pick up his language.â
You gave him a sweet look. âSorry, primary husband.â
Jackâs expression softened against his will.
Shen noticed immediately.
Shenâs eyes narrowed. âManipulative.â
Jack looked back at him. âShe is my wife.â
Shen gestured toward you. âPrecisely. You have consolidated power.â
You made another sound into your hand.
Jack sighed. âThere is no power consolidation.â
Shen nodded once. âThat is what men with consolidated power say.â
Jackâs jaw flexed. âDunkin.â
Shenâs mouth barely moved. âLord Abbot.â
Jack stared at him.
You gasped. âOh, my god.â
Shenâs face stayed perfectly calm. âIf I am being married off to a neighboring house, we should use appropriate titles.â
Jack shook his head. âYou are not being married off.â
Shen looked at you. âHouse Bridesmaid has expressed interest.â
You lost the fight and laughed.
Jack looked at you. âHappy?â
You leaned subtly into his side. âA little.â
Jackâs hand found the small of your back automatically.
Shen saw it. His eyes flicked down, then back up.
Shenâs expression turned pained. âThere it is.â
Jackâs eyes narrowed. âWhat?â
Shen gestured vaguely between you. âThe newlywed posture.â
You smiled. âThe what?â
Shen looked at you. âPossessive but smug.â
Jack stared at him. âI am neither.â
Shen looked back at Jack. âYou are both.â
You patted Jackâs chest. âYou are a little smug.â
Jack looked down at you. âBecause I married you.â
Your face softened.
For half a second, the whole bit almost collapsed under the weight of that.
Then Shen cleared his throat. âUnbearable.â
Jack looked back at him. âYou are going to dinner.â
Shen blinked. âThat was abrupt.â
Jack shrugged. âIt was efficient.â
Shenâs mouth barely moved. âYouâve been practicing.â
Jack ignored that. âMara is in town next weekend. She asked about you. My wife thinks you two might get along.â
You smiled at the wording.
Shen glanced from you to Jack. âAnd what do you think?â
Jack went quiet.
You looked up at him.
Jack could have said several things.
He could have said that he thought Shen needed to stop calling himself the backup husband. He could have said that the contingency needed to be retired, dismantled, and buried under six feet of marital permanence. He could have said that if Shen had someone else to aim his paperwork at, Jackâs life would improve significantly.
All of that was true.
Unfortunately, so was something else.
Jack looked at Shen. âI think you should meet her.â
Shenâs expression shifted.
Barely.
But Jack caught it.
You did too.
Shen looked away first, turning back toward his computer as if the chart on his screen had suddenly become urgent. âThat was suspiciously sincere.â
Jack shrugged. âTry not to make it weird.â
Shen looked over his shoulder. âYou came to me at two in the morning with a bridesmaid and a marital agenda.â
Jack looked unimpressed. âYou make it weird by existing.â
You touched Jackâs arm. âBaby.â
Jack glanced at you. âWhat?â
You gave him a look.
Jack sighed and looked back at Shen. âFine. You make it complicated by existing.â
Shen nodded once. âMore accurate.â
You leaned your hip against the counter. âSo youâll go?â
Shen looked at you for a long moment.
Then he looked at Jack.
Shen asked, âWhat is my dowry?â
Jack stared at him.
You pressed your lips together again.
Shen lifted one finger. âI assume negotiations have begun.â
Jackâs voice came out low. âThere is no dowry.â
Shen frowned. âInsulting.â
You leaned forward, delighted. âWhat would you want in a dowry?â
Jack turned to you. âDo not ask that.â
Shen answered anyway. âA reliable espresso machine. Two quiet weekends per month. Full custody of the corner computer. No surprise birthday dinners.â
You nodded thoughtfully. âReasonable.â
Jack looked at you. âDo not call his dowry demands reasonable.â
Shenâs brow furrowed. âDemands?â
Jack looked at him. âYou requested custody of hospital property.â
Shen lifted his chin. âI am a valuable match.â
You coughed to cover a laugh.
Jackâs eyes narrowed. âYou are enjoying this.â
Shen looked deeply offended. âI am being put out to pasture.â
You laughed outright. âThat is not what this is.â
Shen looked at you. âI am being paraded before available women because Jack fears the strength of the backup husband clause.â
Jack said, âNope.â
Shen continued, âHe seeks to marry me off before I threaten the line of succession.â
Jack said, âStill nope.â
You leaned against Jack, delighted. âThe line of succession?â
Shen nodded gravely. âYour marriage is young. The throne is vulnerable.â
Jackâs hand tightened at your waist. âMy marriage is not vulnerable.â
Shen looked at Jack. âThen why am I being prepared for auction?â
Jack stared at him. âAuction?â
Shen looked pointedly at you. âShe asked about the dowry.â
You lifted both hands. âI was curious.â
Jack looked toward the ceiling. âGod help me.â
Shen turned back to his computer. âI will require time to prepare.â
You brightened. âPrepare?â
Shen clicked his mouse once. âIf I must enter the marriage mart, I refuse to do so without dignity.â
Jack muttered, âToo late.â
Shen looked over his shoulder. âI heard that.â
Jack said, âGood.â
You stepped closer to Shenâs side of the counter. âItâs just dinner.â
Shen looked up at you. âDinner is often how these arrangements begin.â
Jack leaned against the counter. âThese arrangements.â
Shen looked at him. âCourtship. Marriage. Disappointment. Estate disputes.â
You covered your mouth.
Jack pointed at Shen. âItâs dinner at a restaurant.â
Shen considered that. âA courtship venue.â
Jack closed his eyes. âIt is not courtship.â
You smiled at Shen. âIt could be dinner.â
Shen went still.
Jack looked at you. âThere it is.â
Shenâs eyes moved slowly to Jack. âDinner.â
You nodded. âYou and Mara.â
Shen sat back in his chair. âUnsupervised courtship.â
Jack shook his head. âA meal.â
Shen continued as if Jack had not spoken. âWithout chaperones.â
You smiled. âThat is usually how dates work.â
Shen looked at you. âSo we are admitting it is a date.â
Jack sighed. âWe are admitting nothing.â
Shen looked back at Jack. âYou are sending me alone into society.â
Jack said, âYou are meeting a woman for dinner.â
Shen lifted his chin. âMany tragedies begin with invitations phrased exactly that way.â
You grinned. âJohn.â
Shen looked at you. âYes?â
You softened slightly. âYou donât have to say yes.â
Shen went quiet.
Jack watched him carefully.
You added, âI mean it. If you donât want to go, we wonât push.â
Shen looked at you. âThat is not what this feels like.â
Jack said, âThat is because you keep calling it an auction.â
Shenâs eyes shifted to Jack.
For once, he did not have an immediate answer.
Jack asked, âWhat time are you free?â
Shen blinked. âYou are ignoring my objections.â
Jack nodded. âCorrect.â
Shen looked at you. âIs this how marriage works?â
You smiled. âSometimes.â
Shen looked back at Jack. âThis is alarming.â
Jack said, âSeven.â
Shen frowned. âSeven is early.â
You reminded him, âFor people who do not work nights, seven is normal dinner.â
Shen looked toward the dark windows near the ambulance bay. âUnsettling.â
Jack asked, âCan you do seven or not?â
Shen considered that. âI can attend the diplomatic dinner at seven.â
Jack said, âGood.â
Shenâs eyes narrowed. âWill you be nearby?â
Jack stared at him. âNo.â
Shen looked at you. âWill you?â
You smiled. âAlso no.â
Shen sat back. âSo I am being sent without escort.â
Jack said, âYou are a grown man.â
Shen replied, âNot in this narrative.â
You laughed softly.
Shen picked up his coffee. âThis is a coordinated marital effort to attach me to House Bridesmaid.â
Jack sighed. âAttach.â
Shen looked at him. âI am avoiding stronger language.â
Jack said, âGood choice.â
Shen paused with the cup near his mouth. âWhat should I wear?â
Your eyes brightened. âSomething nice.â
Shen looked offended. âI always wear something nice.â
Jack glanced at Shenâs scrub top.
Shenâs eyes narrowed. âDonât.â
Jack lifted both hands. âDidnât say anything.â
Shen took a sip of coffee. âYou thought it loudly.â
You leaned closer to the counter. âJohn.â
Shen looked at you. âYes?â
Your voice softened. âShe really did seem interested.â
Shenâs expression went still for half a second.
Jack caught it.
So did you.
Shen set his coffee down with care. âThen I will enter the marriage mart with dignity.â
Jack sighed. âIt is dinner.â
Shen looked at him. âYou keep saying that like history supports you.â
Jack opened his mouth, then decided against it.
You looked entirely too pleased with both of them.
Jack let his hand settle more firmly at your waist.
Shen returned to his chart, but his coffee stayed untouched beside him for the next five minutes.
Jack noticed.
So did you.
Neither of you said anything.
Not yet.
By nine-thirteen, Jack had almost succeeded.
That was the most insulting part.
You were on your back on the couch, one hand in his hair, your other tucked beneath the hem of his shirt while Jack kissed a slow path down the side of your neck. Your body was warm beneath his, soft and familiar and already curving toward him in that way that made his brain go quiet around the edges.
Your laugh had gone breathless ten minutes ago.
Your teasing had gone quiet five minutes ago.
Your knee had hooked around his hip two minutes ago.
For the first time all night, no one had said the words dowry, marriage mart, or John Shen.
Jack was beginning to feel cautiously optimistic.
Then your phone buzzed on the coffee table.
You went still beneath him.
Jack stopped with his mouth against your throat.
âNo,â Jack said immediately.
You lifted your head. âI have to check it.â
Jackâs mouth moved to the sensitive place beneath your jaw. âYou donât.â
Your fingers tightened in his shirt. âI have to.â
Jack kissed your neck again, slower this time, like he was making a very reasonable counterargument. âYou really donât.â
Your breath caught.
Jack felt it.
He was so close.
Then your phone buzzed again.
Your head turned toward the coffee table.
Jack froze.
For one long second, neither of you moved.
Then Jack lifted his head and stared down at you.
âSo close,â Jack said.
You pressed your lips together. âBaby.â
Jackâs eyes narrowed. âDo not baby me while choosing a notification over your husband.â
You winced. âIt might be John.â
Jack closed his eyes. âOf course it might be John.â
You slid one hand out from beneath his shirt and reached toward the coffee table.
Jack stayed braced over you, watching with the grave disappointment of a man witnessing betrayal in real time.
You unlocked the screen.
Then your face fell.
Jack watched you. âWhat?â
You cleared your throat. âItâs not him.â
Jack stared.
You set the phone slowly back down. âItâs CVS.â
For one full second, Jack did not move.
Then he pushed himself up on one hand. âCVS.â
You bit your lip. âTwenty percent off.â
Jack nodded once, calm in a way that was not calm at all. âYou stopped me for a coupon.â
You sat up beneath him. âI didnât know it was a coupon.â
Jack pointed at the phone. âYou chose the possibility of Shen over the certainty of your husband.â
You opened your mouth.
Jack lifted his eyebrows.
You closed it again.
Jack nodded. âExactly.â
You reached for him. âJack.â
Jack sat back on the couch and dragged one hand down his face. âNo.â
Your mouth twitched. âNo?â
Jack looked at you. âI am regrouping.â
You shifted closer on your knees. âYouâre regrouping?â
Jack glanced at the phone like it had personally offended him. âI was interrupted by a pharmacy discount.â
You tried very hard not to laugh.
Jack saw it immediately.
He pointed at you. âDo not.â
You pressed your lips together.
Jackâs eyes narrowed. âYou are laughing at me internally.â
You lifted both hands. âIâm not.â
âYou are,â Jack said. âAnd worse, you are still waiting for Shen.â
Your expression softened into guilt too quickly for him to stay properly annoyed.
You looked down at the phone. âHe said he would text me after.â
Jack leaned back against the couch. âHe will.â
âWhat if he doesnât?â you asked.
Jack looked at you. âThen the date is going well.â
You went still.
Jack watched the thought land and immediately regretted giving it to you.
Your eyes widened. âOh, my god.â
Jack closed his eyes. âThat was meant to help.â
âWhat if itâs going well?â you asked, suddenly sitting straighter.
Jack opened his eyes again. âThat is the desired outcome.â
You grabbed his forearm. âBut what if itâs going really well?â
Jack stared at you. âAgain. Desired.â
You looked toward the phone like it might start glowing with answers. âWhat if heâs nervous?â
Jack said, âHe is definitely nervous.â
Your head snapped back toward him. âJack.â
Jack lifted one hand. âI am sorry. Would you prefer lying?â
You pressed your hand to your chest. âHe doesnât do this.â
Jackâs expression shifted despite himself. âDate?â
You shook your head. âLet people in.â
That stopped him.
The joke loosened around the edges, just enough for him to see what was sitting under it.
You looked down at the phone again, quieter now. âHe jokes and deflects and turns everything into paperwork, but this is different. Mara could actually like him, and I justâŚâ You swallowed. âI really want someone to like him enough to stay.â
Jack watched you for a second.
Then he sighed, because of course you had to go and make it tender.
Of course you did.
Jack reached for your hand and tugged you gently back toward him. âCome here.â
You let him pull you between his knees. âAre you still mad?â
Jack looked up at you. âI was never mad.â
You gave him a look.
Jack amended, âI was sexually inconvenienced.â
A laugh broke out of you before you could stop it.
Jackâs hands settled at your waist. His thumbs moved lightly against your sides, more soothing now than suggestive.
Jack said, softer, âI know. I get it.â
You touched his cheek. âYou do?â
Jack glanced at the phone, then back at you. âUnfortunately, yes.â
Your smile came back, small and fond.
Jackâs thumb moved over your hip. âI wanted him happy. I did not realize his happiness would require this much supervision from my living room.â
You nodded seriously. âItâs a big night.â
Jack stared at you. âIt is his date. Somehow I am also on it.â
Your mouth twitched. âA little.â
Jack looked at you. âDo not say emotionally.â
You pressed your lips together.
Jack pointed at you. âDo not.â
You laughed and leaned into him, your arms sliding loosely around his shoulders. Jack let himself have that much. Let himself have the weight of you close again, the smell of your hair, the warmth of your body settling where it belonged.
Then you looked at the phone again.
Jack felt it.
His eyes closed.
Jack said, âSweetheart.â
You winced. âSorry.â
Jack opened his eyes. âYou are not sorry.â
You said, âI am a little sorry.â
Jack said, âYou are vibrating.â
You said, âI am concerned.â
Jack said, âYou are enjoying this.â
You looked offended. âI am not enjoying being concerned.â
Jackâs eyebrows lifted.
You hesitated.
Then you admitted, âI am enjoying being hopeful.â
Jackâs annoyance softened again, against his will and better judgment.
Damn it.
You were impossible to stay mad at.
Jack slid his hands more firmly around your waist and pulled you closer. âHope quietly.â
You nodded. âI can do that.â
Jack gave you a look.
You nodded again, more convincingly. âI can try.â
Jack leaned in and kissed you.
You kissed him back immediately, which was encouraging.
Very encouraging.
Jackâs hand slid up your back. Your fingers curled at the nape of his neck. For one brief, beautiful second, he thought maybe the crisis had passed.
Then your phone stayed silent.
Completely silent.
You broke the kiss anyway and glanced at it.
Jack lifted his head slowly.
You looked back at him. âWhat if he needs me?â
Jack stared. âShen is on a date, not trapped in a well.â
You pulled back, scandalized. âJack Abbot.â
Jack dropped his hands from your waist. âNo.â
You blinked. âNo?â
Jack leaned back, wounded dignity settling over him like a coat. âNo. I am not being scolded for failing to treat dinner with House Bridesmaid as a rescue operation.â
You pointed at him. âThis is important.â
Jack pointed back at the couch. âSo was this.â
You stared at him like he had suggested leaving Shen unattended in traffic. âJack Abbot, how can you be thinking about sex at a time like this?â
Jack went still.
Then he slowly lifted his head and looked at you.
âI donât know,â Jack said, voice dangerously even. âMaybe because two minutes ago, you were under me with your hands up my shirt, and now weâre here.â
Your mouth opened.
Jack gestured toward the couch. âThere was momentum.â
You pressed your lips together.
Jack pointed at you. âDo not laugh.â
You said, âIâm not laughing.â
Jack stared at your face. âYou are fighting for your life.â
A laugh broke out of you anyway.
Jack stared at you, utterly betrayed.
You leaned forward, still laughing, and pressed your forehead to his shoulder. âIâm sorry.â
Jack said, âThat apology lacks structure.â
You laughed harder. âStructure?â
Jackâs voice stayed dry. âSpecificity. Accountability. A plan for changed behavior.â
You wrapped your arms around him. âIâm sorry I interrupted our momentum for John Shen.â
Jack nodded once. âBetter.â
You lifted your head, still smiling. âAnd CVS.â
Jackâs eyes narrowed. âDo not bring CVS back into this.â
You laughed into his shoulder.
Jack sighed and let one hand settle at the back of your neck. âI have been very patient.â
You nodded against him. âYou have.â
Jack said, âI supported the date.â
You said, âYou did.â
Jack said, âI negotiated with a man who asked for a dowry.â
You said, âYou did so well.â
Jack said, âI endured the phrase marriage mart.â
You said, âYou were very brave.â
Jack said, âI accepted that my wifeâs best friend has somehow become a recurring presence in my intimate life.â
You lifted your head. âHe is not a presence in your intimate life.â
Jack looked at you.
You looked back.
Then you winced. âOkay.â
Jack nodded once. âThank you.â
Your phone buzzed.
You gasped so sharply Jackâs spine went straight.
Jack asked, already turning toward the coffee table, âWhat?â
You grabbed the phone. âItâs him.â
Jack closed his eyes. âDo not gasp like that unless someone is actively bleeding.â
You ignored him completely, unlocking the screen with trembling fingers.
Jack watched your face.
Your eyes moved over the message.
Then your mouth opened.
Jack waited.
You pressed one hand to your chest. âDiplomatic proceedings have concluded.â
Jack stared at you. âHe did not.â
You turned the phone toward him.
Jack read the message.
John: Diplomatic proceedings have concluded.
Jack exhaled through his nose. âOf course he did.â
Another text appeared.
John: House Bridesmaid remains interested.
You made a sound Jack had only ever heard from you in moments of personal emergency or excellent gossip.
Jack looked at you. âBreathe.â
You grabbed his arm. âShe remains interested.â
Jack nodded. âI can read.â
You bounced once on the couch. âJack.â
Jack said, âI know.â
Another text came through.
John: She asked if I wanted coffee tomorrow.
You went completely still.
Jack watched you.
Your eyes lifted slowly to his.
You whispered, âCoffee.â
Jackâs mouth twitched. âI heard.â
You grabbed his shirt. âCoffee, Jack.â
Jack covered your hand with his own. âI understand the ritual significance.â
You said, âShe asked him for coffee.â
Jack said, âShe did.â
You said, âTomorrow.â
Jack said, âYes.â
You said, âMorning coffee.â
Jack nodded once. âImportant coffee.â
Your face softened so completely that Jackâs chest tightened.
You said, âHeâs okay.â
Jack looked at the phone, then back at you. âHeâs okay.â
You said, âAnd she likes him.â
Jack glanced at the message again. âIt appears House Bridesmaid remains interested.â
You laughed, bright and relieved, and fell forward into his chest.
Jack caught you automatically.
For a moment, he let himself hold you there. Let himself feel the relief in you, the happiness, the way you shook a little with it. Shen had texted. The date had gone well. Mara wanted coffee. The man who had taken care of you before Jack could had, apparently, survived being seen by someone new.
Jack was glad.
Annoyingly glad.
Then your phone buzzed again.
You lifted your head.
John: Do not make this strange.
You were already typing before Jack could inhale.
Jack took the phone gently out of your hands. âNo.â
You gasped. âJack.â
Jack held the phone out of reach. âYou will make it strange.â
You said, âI have to respond.â
Jack looked at you. âYou absolutely do not.â
You argued, âHe told me not to make it strange.â
Jack said, âAnd you took that as a call to action.â
You reached for the phone. âI need to be supportive.â
Jack looked at the screen. âYou need to be restrained.â
Your mouth fell open.
Jack typed with one thumb.
You leaned over his arm, trying to see. âWhat are you saying?â
Jack angled the phone away. âSomething normal.â
You asked, âDefine normal.â
Jack sent the message and handed the phone back.
You looked down.
You: Good. Coffee is good. Do not overthink it.
Your expression softened with surprise. âThatâs actually really good.â
Jack lifted his brows. âActually?â
You smiled. âItâs very you.â
Jack leaned back. âEfficient.â
The phone buzzed again.
John: Why does this sound like Jack?
You burst out laughing and folded into Jackâs chest again.
Jack let himself smile that time.
A little.
You laughed until your shoulders shook, until the anxious edge finally drained out of you, until you were warm and loose against him again.
Jack waited.
Patiently.
Heroically.
Then he took the phone from your hand, set it facedown on the coffee table, and stood.
You looked up at him, still smiling. âWhat are you doing?â
Jack held out his hand. âDate successful.â
You placed your hand in his. âYes.â
Jack pulled you gently to your feet. âShen alive.â
You nodded. âYes.â
Jack said, âHouse Bridesmaid interested.â
Your grin widened. âVery.â
Jackâs hands settled at your waist. âGood. No more Shen.â
You blinked up at him, smile turning wicked. âNo more Shen?â
Jack leaned in, his voice low and absolutely done. âBedroom. Please. Now.â
You laughed. âPlease?â
Jackâs eyes darkened. âIâm being polite because Iâm your husband.â
Your expression softened in a way that made all the irritation worth it.
Then, because you were still you, your mouth curved. âPrimary husband?â
Jackâs expression went flat. âOnly husband.â
You slid your arms around his neck. âOnly husband.â
Jackâs grip tightened at your waist. âSay it again.â
You smiled up at him, softer now. âOnly husband.â
Jack kissed you.
The kiss was not gentle for long.
You made a small sound into his mouth, your fingers sliding back into his hair, and Jack felt the last of the nightâs patience snap in a clean, satisfying line.
Then you pulled back just enough to whisper, âCan I text him one moreââ
Jack lifted his head. âNo.â
You laughed.
Jack bent, caught you around the waist, and hauled you up against him with enough ease to make you gasp.
Jack carried you toward the bedroom as your laughter broke bright against his shoulder. âAbsolutely not. The neighboring kingdom can wait until morning.â
You clung to him, laughing. âYouâre being dramatic.â
Jack pushed the bedroom door open with his shoulder. âI have endured a CVS coupon, a diplomatic proceeding, and the spiritual chaperoning of John Shenâs first date.â
You smiled against his neck. âYou were heroic.â
Jack set you down just inside the room and pulled you back against him. âI was abandoned.â
You touched his face, still smiling. âYou were delayed.â
Jack looked at you. âBy Shen.â
You kissed him once, soft and apologetic. âBy love.â
Jackâs expression shifted.
You watched it happen, your hand gentle against his cheek.
Jack sighed. âThat was manipulative.â
You smiled. âHighly effective?â
Jackâs mouth curved despite himself. âDeeply unethical.â
You laughed, and Jack kissed you again before you could say anything else.
This time, blessedly, you let him.
