While rewatching Tribunal, I suddenly realised why I always found the "processing" scene so wildly unpleasant, and I wanna talk about it. Mind the CW above.

Basically, I think that the scene is heavily and intentionally framed in terms of sexual assault. Miles is kidnapped, forcibly stripped, drugged and locked into restraints that look like this:

Now, ostensibly the purpose of restraining him is to extract a tooth for the records, but - sorry - I've been to many a dentist in my life and none of them ever made me spread my legs like that. This is not what a dentist chair looks like. This was a choice.

And in case that wasn't clear enough, in the very next scene Keiko calls it being violated. In fact, she repeats the word "violated" twice:

I believe that she is most likely being trafficked for sexual exploitation here. Dasha mentions his mother and his sister, but no father; indicating that they are a family of three. Single-parent households tend to be at an economic disadvantage, as they usually cannot work full-time to fully support the family. They have to care for their children after all. Or they don’t have the education or the opportunity to secure a well-paying job.

But then Dasha’s mother is not only offered a job, but a place for her and her family to live. They might’ve been economically struggling due to their family situation before, but now they are guaranteed security and stability. Bankoku-gai population is predominantly immigrants, so they’re also less likely to experience discrimination they may have faced before. Not to mention they got the referral from someone Dasha’s mother knew. Surely they’re trustworthy…?

However, this “job” requires Dasha’s mom to leave her children at home for hours at a time. Unsupervised. It gets so dire that her children are left without food for days, which leads to Dasha stealing that roti.

This is why I think that the job Dasha’s mother was offered was actually sex work in disguise. I say sex work, because a huge chunk of human trafficking victims are female, and over 70% of women and girls are sexually exploited due to gender disparity. Men on the other hand are more likely to be trafficked for labor. 

It’s possible that Dasha’s mother was coerced and then forced into sex work. As sexually exploitative labor tends to be unregulated (because well. It’s illegal and unethical), it would cause her to leave her children alone for hours. She is most likely unable to leave this job or even regulate her hours under the pretense of blackmail or losing their family’s only source of income. Additionally, people are most likely to be trafficked by people they already know on a personal, from friends to even family members.

Since immigrants without a stable financial situation are especially vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation, I wonder if there are many more situations like this in Bankoku-gai. Families are promised work and shelter, only to be taken advantage of by certain parties inside Bankoku-gai. They have no choice but to give up their children as they cannot adequately support their families due to the exploitation they face. Or the Red Chanpurus take them in. But this is a very broad assumption on my end.

Just because we were both kids doesn’t mean it was ok. I kept telling you no but you told me it was ok, we’re both girls right? That automatically makes it ok. Right? Even if I told you no. Because we’re cousins it’s ok.
