Boston’s Mapparium

A teaser for what comes in about 10 days time - New York and New England, USA in the fall of 2013. The “Mapparium” is part of the Christian Science Mary Baker Eddy Library in Boston. This is a scan of a postcard because my pics did not do it justice. Quite a surreal experience walking through this.

Commissioned by #RogerBabson in 1947, the #BabsonWorkdGlobe was the largest globe of the Earth when it was dedicated in 1955. Babson’s aim was to “impress upon students and other viewers an appreciation of the world as a whole”. At 28 feet in diameter and weighing 25 tons it remains a monumental sight n the #BabsonCollege campus. . . Aspiring cartographers looking for more inspiration around New England might also check out #Eartha in Yarmouth, Maine or the #Mapparium at the Mary Baker Eddy Library in Boston. #maps #globes #cartography #worldslargest #igersnewengland #massachusetts_igers (at Babson College) https://www.instagram.com/p/BySt5B0F5YO/?igshid=fniz03yko5yx
"As Christian Scientists you seek to define God to your own consciousness by feeling and applying the nature and practical possibilities of divine Love: to gain the absolute and supreme certainty that Christianity is now what Christ Jesus taught and demonstrated — health, holiness, immortality." Boston- Mapparium & Library
Because Lindsay arrived in Boston I thought it was important to once again venture out to the Mapparium which is a giant whisper-room globe. I must say, upon a second visit, it is much smaller than I remember. But it was still interesting to visit. The world trapped in the 1950′s with beautiful glass work.
Not a bad place to get out of the cold for 6$
Just a 15min walk from the Mapparium is the Boston Public Library
which does Free Tours every day ( check the website for times) The tours are lead by volunteers and covers mostly the art and architecture of the Library.
It’s full of interesting murals and sculptures and it was made all the more interesting to hear the stories behind the building of the library. The tales of the artists and how they were commissioned certainly made you appreciate them more!
The tour was about an hour, which gave us just enough time to catch an Uber to the ship.
