José María Teclo Morelos Pérez y Pavón (1765-1815) was a leader in the Mexican War of Independence from Spain. A Roman Catholic priest and a revolutionary, he was responsible for much of the organization surrounding the warfare and the establishment of the independent Congress of Anáhuac.

Born in the city now called 'Morelia' after him, he worked as a laborer for most of his early life, but wanted to do something beyond working with his hands. He enrolled in college and became ordained as a priest.

The former rector of the college, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (actually a distant relation of Morelos!), called the town together and urged them to take up arms against Spanish colonial authorities. Hidalgo u Costilla's army marched on the government and was met with success.

Morelos was determined to join this revolt, and quickly showed a natural affinity for strategy, training, and recruitment. In his first nine months as a military commander, he won 22 victories.

In 1813, Morelos called the National Constituent Congress of Chilpancingo (also called the Congress of Anáhuac) which declared independence and established a Mexican government.

He died 2 years later, captured alone after ordering his men to save themselves. He was tried for treason and sentenced to death by firing squad.

An 1846 law providing for the gradual elimination of slavery in New Jersey reclassified the enslaved as "apprentices for life", thus still binding one to their owner, unless he or she was able to purchase their freedom or was manumitted. The law also stated that children born to "apprentices" were free and may continue to live with their parents; however, some adults were "sold for a term" to Southern states for their labor, a practice denounced by the state’s Quaker abolitionists. 

Although slavery was abolished when New Jersey entered into the Civil War, news of the Emancipation Proclamation did not reach the outermost edges of the Confederacy until over two year after President Lincoln signed it. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the enslaved living in Texas finally learned that they were free from approaching Union troops and Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger who stated:
