GrittibÀnz
Where did the "GrittibÀnz" get its name from? "Samichlaus" (Saint Nicholas Dec. 6th) will be coming soon - and that means it's "GrittibÀnztime" again. In the Bern dialect, a "Gritti" is an old, frail man who walks with his legs apart, because "grÀtte"/"gritte" means "spread your legs, straddle". "BÀnz" is a pet form of Benedict and similar male names that were popular in the past.
