I would like to submit one of my managers for the unofficial Worst Manager of the Year Award.
Here is a small list of reasons why I think this manager deserves the award based off of my latest shift closing with her:
•She called me in asking if I could come in early when she was the first to clock out for the night. We close at midnight and she clocked out the very first chance she could get, at 11:55.
•When I told her I couldn’t come in early her response was, “Well why not? You have open availability today don’t you?” Because I’m not allowed to have a life on my days off, after work, or before work.
•She questioned why I was on my phone when I should have been on the clock. I have a minute before I’m actually allowed to punch in, lady, let me finish catching this damn Pokémon!
•When I finished covering breaks I proceeded to walk up to her to ask what she wanted me to do next. Before I could open my mouth she walked away and disappeared for 10 minutes. When she came back she asked me why I wasn’t doing anything. I just spent those 10 minutes collecting throwbacks from peoples’ registers and organizing them, which you would know if you were actually up front where you were supposed to be!
•She can hide in the office and talk on her phone or converse with the customers all she wants, but the second we take even 30 seconds longer with a customer or - GASP! - a coworker just to see how they’re doing she’s all “why aren’t you working? Stop yakking and get back to work!”
•She questioned why 3 out of the 5 self scans were down and, despite my telling her legitimate reasons why they were closed she took my self scan card and opened them up anyway. 2 out of 3 of them proceeded to act up within the first 2 orders. She wouldn't let me shut them down again until she saw them for herself like a half hour later.
•Also instead of helping us up front she took throwbacks out of a wagon, took that wagon, shopped around the store, proceeded to scan her items at 1 of the now 3 working self scans, and then left her order there (therefore making actual customers unable to use the machine until she paid) because she forgot her wallet. She disappeared for another 15 minutes.
•She took out a bag of frozen vegetables from one of the coolers (you know, the ones with the sodas and waters by the registers) and told me to put them back. They were soft as hell and were in a refrigerator for who knows how long. They’re supposed to be FROZEN. You really want to sell soggy unfrozen vegetables to the customers you want to chat with so much?
•She questioned why I wasn’t organizing throwbacks while I was trying to watch self scan. Granted at that particular point, just after I started rebooting one of the registers (spoiler, it didn’t work and it was one of the ones that had to get re-shut down after she INSISTED all the self scans HAD to be on no matter what), there were only 2 self scans opened. But I’m running back and forth between the two registers trying to help them bag to get them out of here quicker because of the long *** lines. When do I even have the time to think about throwbacks?
•She came back to self scan towards the end of the night to scan MORE stuff and questioned why I wasn’t helping a customer when I was in the middle of helping someone else. So she insisted I give her my card so she could do it herself. Not that I needed my self scan card for anything because I clearly wasn’t in the middle of helping someone. /sarcasm
•3 of the cashiers went home at 9. We had 3 hours left. There were 3 of us besides the manager. One coworker was on her break. I was at self scan. The other was supposed to be getting rid of the throwbacks. Not once did the manager comes up front to remotely do anything to help out, not even help my coworker bag. Also, this manager’s the one who made the schedule that sent 3 cashiers home with 3 hours left of the night.
•She guilt tripped one of the maintenance guys into staying until closing to give her a ride home which was out of his way. Yes, she gave him gas money. But he had somewhere to be after work, too. He was late for it.
•Also she ate a couple of my potato chips. There was still plenty left to get me through the night but it was my work snack. She did like $70 worth of food shopping while on the clock, why couldn’t she get her own work snack while she was at it? (Ok fine this is a personal, selfish reason in the grand scheme of things but is it too much to ask to let a retail employee enjoy their Doritos in between the madness?)
In conclusion, I hope you consider my manager for this award. These 6 hours alone prove that she is worthy of such an honor.
Also how many people actually want to submit Horrible Manager Stories and vote for a Worst Manager of the Year Award? Just asking.
