How to make a floor length skirt that has kind of "prairie days" feel to it.

(What I mean by prairie days is it has a similar look and feel to it as the skirts the would have typically been worn during the time of colonization moving west in the United States)

Anyways the measurements you need and how to take them:

Waist: to take this measurement take a soft measuring tape (if you don't have one take a string and then measure it's length) and wrap it around the smallest part of your torso. Where the end piece and the longer part meet there should be a number, that is your waist size. You may notice there is some squish quality in your waist, you can go in a few fractions of an inch but I suggest against unless you plan on wearing a corset

*DON'T OBSESS OVER HOW BIG YOUR WAIST SEEMS, it's because it's laid out completely flat and even the tiniest of cylinders seem large when you lay them out flat*

Hip: this one is a little more awkward especially if you have a friend helping or you are taking a friend's measurements.

What you do is you wrap it around your hips and you make sure it accounts for your butt. You need to make sure it is straight on your butt because it WILL mess up the measurements if you don't.

And then the same thing as the waist, see where that number is at

Outseam: this is the measurement from your waist line (smallest part of torso) to your ankles

Press the end of the measuring tape to your waist line and let it drop to your feet, of you have a friend with you it will be a good idea to have them pull straight and tell you what the number at your ankles

You may also want to measure your hips at the hip bone: find where the bone of your hips start and measure them like it's the waist area

And you may also want to measure the distance between your waist and your hips (measurement that included your butt)

is it wierd that when I’m making a knitting pattern, I like to pick a number and make all of my design choices based on that number?

I need to make a pattern for a bodice off one I already have. I was bemoaning the fact that I didn't have any newspaper to use. To distract myself while I tried to think of something besides the expensive printer paper to use instead, I cleaned and rearranged the bookcase some to fit in a handful of new books we had acquired. As a picked up a handful of grocery store ads to put them in the recycling pile, I realized.

They were perfect. Just what I needed, and unlike newspaper, they were free. I didn't have to pay for them or go groping around in neighbor's garbage after one. We get them every week, and surely using them to create something with is at least slightly less wasteful than even recycling.
