Masts and sails in a sailing ship.

Here's a few shots from a large #sailboat #sculpture project I have been working on. Made mostly from from 14 gauge steel, this piece is heavy! I designed this to have overlaping layers of textures and shapes to give it that feeling of depth and #dimension as well as #movement. The #sails are full of wind, the #flag is waving in the breeze and the #ship in bounding with the motion of the #waves. One of the requests from the client was that I use some of the extra pieces from their new home build. So the blue water is tin from the roofing and the rebar was leftover from the foundation construction. I had enough tin to double up the water layers amd give the #sea that extra depth while portraying water peeling away from the bow as it pushes through the waves driven by wind. The #bowspirit and #mainmast were forged from black pipe. The ends were drawn out and hot cut and forged into tapers to create additional optical dimension. The sails, ship body and flag were all shaped over an English wheel. I love how full of wind they are. I left a bit of rust on the top flag as a complimentary color accent to the blue water. The whole piece was coated with an acrylic poly spray to give it that extra glow effect like light in an oil painting. #thepxsmith (at Daniel Island)

#mainmast #lady Washington #tallship leaving #Astoria, #oregon for #blaine #washington. This ship was the main ship in #piratesofthecaribbean. Unlike the original ship, This #brig has an engine. The original #lady Washington was built in 1787. (at Columbia River Maritime Museum)
