Chapter one: when Lance and his sister Veronica are leaving for school
...
The morning boats had multiplied, filling the canals with color and sound. Streamhollow was built around water, the entire district was a network of canals and bridges, with buildings rising up on either side like something out of a painting. The architecture was all smooth curves and flowing lines, as if the buildings themselves had been shaped by water over time. Which, in some cases, they had been.
"You okay?" Veronica asked as they crossed one of the arched bridges toward the main district.
"Yeah, why?"
"You've been quiet. Well, quieter than usual."
Lance forced a grin. "Just thinking about club. Wondering what we'll work on today."
"Allura mentioned something about advanced shielding techniques," Veronica said. "Should be cool."
"Yeah." Lance tried to sound enthusiastic. Shielding was useful, sure, but it wasn't exactly exciting. Not like watching Hunk lift massive boulders, or seeing Shiro cast amazing spells.
They walked through the marketplace, where vendors were setting up for the day. Most of them were Aquamancers, naturally, using their magic to display their wares. One woman had created an entire fountain display with fish made of water swimming through the air. Another vendor was using water pressure to cut precise patterns into driftwood.
"Show-offs," Veronica muttered, but she was smiling.
As they crossed into the main area of the Convergence, the neutral ground where all six districts met, the architecture began to shift. The flowing, organic style of Streamhollow gave way to something more diverse. Here, buildings reflected all the different magic types: Everdale's structures were covered in living vines and flowers, Cindereth's buildings had sharp angles and metal accents that caught the light, Skyvern's towers seemed impossibly tall and delicate, Luminarch's academy buildings were covered in constellation maps and astronomical symbols, and…
Lance's gaze slid past the dark, shadowy corner where Shadowfen's district began and ended just as quickly.
No one really went to Shadowfen unless they had to. The Umbramancers kept to themselves, and everyone else seemed happy to let them.
"There's Pidge and Hunk," Veronica said, pointing toward the academy gates.
Sure enough, Lance could see his friends waiting by the entrance. Pidge: short, sharp-eyed, with their hair cut in a messy bob, was gesturing animatedly about something while Hunk nodded along, looking both interested and slightly concerned. They were both wearing the academy uniform, though Pidge had somehow already gotten dirt on theirs.
"Lance! Veronica!" Hunk waved them over, his broad face breaking into a warm smile.
"Hey!" Lance jogged over, Veronica splitting off to join her own friends. "What's up?"
"Pidge is trying to convince me that we should try to make a floating garden," Hunk said.
"I'm not trying to convince you, I'm telling you it would work," Pidge said. "Terramancy plus Aeromancy equals floating rocks with plants. It's basic logic."
"Where would we get an Aeromancer to help?" Lance asked.
"Allura, obviously."
"Does Allura know you're volunteering her for this?"
"Details." Pidge waved a hand dismissively. "The point is, it would be amazing. Imagine gardens in the sky! We could grow things that need specific altitudes, or-"
"Or we could just use regular gardens like normal people," Hunk said gently.
Pidge glared at him. "You're no fun."
"I'm practical."
"Same thing."
Lance grinned, falling into the familiar rhythm of their friendship. Pidge and Hunk had been friends since they were kids, both from Everdale, both Terramancers, both brilliant in completely different ways. Pidge was all wild ideas and experimental magic, while Hunk was steady, grounded, and had a talent for making Terramancy look effortless.
They headed into the academy together, joining the stream of students flowing through the massive entrance hall. Convergence Academy was housed in the main area, where all the magic types were connected and learnt together.
"Think we'll see Keith before first period?" Hunk asked casually.
Too casually.
Lance tried not to react. "I don't know, maybe? Why?"
"No reason." Hunk's expression was carefully innocent. "Just seems like you two have been hanging out a lot lately."
"We're friends," Lance said.
"Uh-huh."
