In 2026 our overarching theme for CritWitchCon is "Fallow and Feral: Active Paths of Rest." We're talking at length this year about the importance of rest in trying times, ways to incorporate fallowness into the cycles of our practices, disconnecting productivity from worth, and straying off the path to find meaning in the messy, unstructured places outside of the lines. I would like it known that this pin fell off my backpack somehow without my noticing, and turned up again several months later on a shelf above the stage manager's desk in the dustiest corner of the theater. Viridis Genii Symposium: A Brainscan Zine Supplemental

In 2023 I started a GoFundMe for my birthday so I could attend the Viridis Genii Symposium in the woods in Washington state. I had wanted to attend for years but it was cost prohibitive for me then, so I asked for help and offered this zine in exchange afterwards. There is no VGS, or what I've started calling it "Wizard Camp", this year and I'm sad about it. It's been 3 years and now I'm offering the zine to the general public! The Viridis Genii Symposium is a multidisciplinary event at a literal camp where you stay in cabins and go swimming in a lake, take walks in a northwest forest, or even have a camp fire (fire bans permitting). There are lectures and workshops on plant magic, folklore, and all the occult goodness around that. There have been attendees and lecturers from all over the country and all over the world. It is truly a special experience. It is supposed to return next year and I'm really excited about it. Viridis Genii Symposium a Brainscan Zine Supplemental is a perzine documenting a four-day event at a camp near Olympia, Washington.This zine explores plant magic, animism, ancestral reclamation, and the process of f "making room" in the vessel of your own practice. This zine is my personal record of diving into world of the "Green Gnosis." From the alchemy of hand-made paper and the folklore of "elf-shot" in Appalachia to the plant-spirit traditions of the Serbian Orthodox folk context, I document the lectures, workshops, and communal discovery found in plants and people. Format: 8.5" x 5.5" (Half-letter) 28 pages green-on-black paper covers with full-color inserts.

Portland Button Works or Spiral House: The New Choose Your Own Adventure Website!

What do you get a business for its 14th birthday? A new website, Apparently!

We’ve spent the last few months rebuilding the Portland Button Works and Spiral House Shop website and we are so excited to share it with you!

We have noticed over the years that customers were either here for custom items, or our catalog items, and rarely both. So, the goal was simple: make it easier and more efficient for people to order custom items at Portland Button Works AND make it easier to find and order from our Spiral House Catalog of pre-made buttons, zines, books and other neat stuff lurking around the shop.

The new site is officially live!

The Split Path

When you arrive at the new site, you’ll be invited to choose your own adventure:

Portland Button Works: (The Custom Shop): These are the buttons, magnets, mirrors, and bottle opener keychains we have always made, but better, and now with an onsite designer, uploader, and a way to store your artwork on our main website!

Spiral House Catalog: This is our curated book shop and zine distro. Browse our "ready-to-ship" designs for pinback buttons, along with our ever-growing collection of books, zines and magical things.

On the Custom Path

RIP Design-O-Matic (Hello, Onsite Designer)

We are officially retiring the old Design-O-Matic. You no longer need to go to a separate site to build your buttons! Every custom product listing now features our integrated onsite designer where you can upload images (multiple!), add text, move layers, and save to your account with us. For those that prefer to use our design templates, they will still be available.

A Note for Returning Customers: If you had artwork stored in the old Design-O-Matic that you need for a reorder, please get in touch with us via our contact form. We can help you retrieve your files so you can move them over to the new system.

May 20th is the 14th birthday of @portlandbuttonworks and @spiralhouseshop What do you get a business for a 14th birthday? A new website, I guess!

We have spent the last several months working with developers to rebuild our website. It will be a split site like a choose your own adventure with path going to the custom items, and one going the catalog of pre-made button designs, books, zines, and other magical things. It will also load faster, include an onsite button design builder, and we also plan to keep a more active blog with infomation about what's going on around the shop and the house.

Devil's Dozen by Gemma Gary

This is great if you want to really get into your Witchfather, Devil, Man in Black era. This is not a generic Male-Archetype-Sungod type of book.

The rituals are meaty and traditional. You will have to acquire Things and go to Places at Times. Do you have a pair of bull horns? No? Then sadly you cannot complete every ritual therein.

LOTS of Witch's Devil lore in these pages, a good book for getting deeper into your craft. Not for beginners or dabblers I wouldn't think.

The Black Toad by Gemma Gary

A whole bunch of traditional Cornish spellwork. It's kind of like if Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells was from just one region and compiled by someone with experience in that tradition. Helpful to think about what kinds of spellwork are out there and the ways you could approach things. But emphasis on the thinking, because idk where you would get like, vole's feet.

Traditional Witchcraft, A Cornish Book of Ways by Gemma Gary

If you want one new book on Traditional Witchcraft today, go for this one. It explains a LOT about her specific style of working, which has been very influential to many practitioners (including myself). If you read Crooked Path by Kelden and you're wondering what's next, try this book.

Wortcunning, a Folk Medicine Herbal by Nigel G Pearson

I got high on magic mushrooms and saw the sigil on the book cover during my trip and this book was released a couple weeks later, so I bought it on that basis alone. VERY interesting infos about folk use of herbs and their corresponding magical use.

Basically, he inherited a family's generational wealth of magical and medicinal plants, and compiled it into a book.

Be aware it is not an herbalist's primer - you need outside education before it's safe to apply these ideas medicinally. But the magical side is very interesting and presented a lot of new ideas about plants I hadn't encountered before.

Under the Bramble Arch by Corrine Boyer

A great look at some common plants that are easily found in way spaces and may be considered weeds. Goes over folklore, folk medicine, and the authors personal practice with some added poems and great workings. It’s one of my go to’s for plant work. Like Wortcunning, it’s not a good beginner work for medicinal herbalism but can be made use of in that way if you have outside education. It’s also organized by what season the plants are harvestable in.

Treading the Mill by Nigel Pearson

Another good one to go to after reading The Crooked Path by Kelden. Goes into a little more depth with directions for the compass and working with spirits. Good for a beginner who has basics down and wants to go a little bit further. It’s got more of an East Anglia bent because that’s where the author is from but still easily applicable to a more generic practice.

I’m going to do more in depth reviews of these books but it’s going to be a while since I’m going in alphabetical order of what’s on my book shelf.
