The Macleanâs debate, by the numbers
Maclean's National Leader's Debate
Iâm actually glad I watched the Mac Debate. It educated me, not only about the party leadersâ stance, but also the status of Canada.
Stephen Harper clearly was getting ambushed by his competitors. Nonetheless, I donât blame them. He kept denying the current recession and other political issues. Other than that, he kept comparing Canada with the G7. The thing is comparing your country with otherâs doesnât determine your progress and achievements. Your fellow countrymen does. He was still well-spoken though and kept his calm. But heâs far from winning the election.
Justin Trudeau, on the other hand, may have a chance. But I, personally, donât think heâs ready. I support the Liberalâs goals, but how theyâll do it, not so much. I donât think giving tax breaks to the middle-class will help improve the economy because once you increase the business classesâ tax then youâve given them a chance to choose between their wealth and their workers which might end at an even worse recession. Also, Trudeau kept attacking Harper, more than May and Mulcair, instead of focusing on what his partyâs going to do.
Whereas Thomas Mulcair did both really well. He called out Harper while telling people what the NDP will do if elected. I did however got the feeling that him and May are on the same page on things. But he is the leading contender. And I wouldnât mind having NDP lead the country.
The winner of the debate to be honest was Elizabeth May. Although her male colleagues overshadowed her most of the time and didnât let her speak, she managed to acknowledge the problem, to be respectful (she said âwith all due respect mr. Harperâ a bunch of times), and to outline the Green Partyâs solutions. I also like their solution to the current recession which is to invest. Investments not only give jobs but also keep one. I would honestly vote for her if I could, but I believe Canadians would make the right decision.
The national debate was actually interesting and almost fun to watch. I feel like my American followers should watch it and get to know the issues of another country, like we do for them, and who they'd vote for, like we do for them.
Insighty!!!
