Being blind is not the same for everyone. Actually very few people are “Totally Blind”. About 80% of people who are blind have some degree of sight. This can range from only being able to tell the difference between light and dark, to seeing shapes or silhouettes or pieces of vision out of the side of side or through a tunnel. The types of remaining vision vary with the factors causing it. But regardless of the condition “legally blind” is a term most blind people fall under. This means the vision has been severely impaired to the degree that it is disabling. So when you see a blind person caning toward you. They may appear to look at you. It’s possible, they are, but who knows how they see you. The point is that blind people are not oblivious to the world around us. We can hear you and we are just as interesting and human as you. Don’t be afraid to speak up to talk with or help a blind person. We could often use it. It’s sad to know everyone just gets silent and watches you like a circus act. I say all of this because I want to increase awareness and let you know that if you see a blind person, who “looks like they can see” they are not faking. It is very difficult for us and we are just people who are trying our best. If nothing else remember this. We are not BLIND people, we are just PEOPLE who can’t see. So take a chance, talk to a blind person. make a friend.
