About 2,000 years ago, farmers in the Mediterranean region selectively bred Brassica oleracea (wild mustard) to emphasize traits like larger, tastier flower buds and stems. Over time, they developed what we now know as broccoli!
But broccoli isn’t alone. This process of artificial selection also gave us cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower—each focusing on a different part of the plant. 🌿
