As an anniversary present, and to help the fact that there was yet to be a mini Malfoy, Lucius left a small basket with two Irish wolf-hound pups on the bed. One with a pink ribbon and one with a blue one. Both of them whimpering as they looked with intense interest at their hopefully new mistress. The one with a pink ribbon nipped at her friend and jumped out to trot and whimper towards Narcissa.
Narcissa felt desolation, there was no other word to describe it. She had one job as a wife and she hadn't been able to fulfil it yet. Her feelings on the matter were entirely internalised, Lucius perceptive enough to leave her to it so as to speak. She appreciated that; that he knew her well enough to know that she didn't need him hovering over her and holding her hand all the time, telling her it would be okay. He had done that when it was required, when she welcomed it, but otherwise did small gestures to help buoy her up a bit so as to speak.
She had been lying in bed, sleeping in courtesy of a silent but restless night. She had been aware of Lucius waking up, fingers skating across her hair as he pressed the lightest kiss to her forehead. She had sighed in response and had buried herself further into the blankets. Her awareness had clouded beyond that until she heard a whimpering sound.
Narcissa's eyes flew open and she sat bolt upright in bed, looking around and quickly taking in the basket with the two dogs and ribbon's round them. Narcissa smiled ever so slightly, shifting her position in bed to a more comfortable one, holding her hand out to the dog that had decided it was going to take those bold steps to a new future.
"Why hello there." She told them, the worry in her brow clearing as she relaxed a touch more, her smile soft but warm.
