A fairie/fairy or faerie is an old broad term for people within the LGBTQ+ who were promiscuous, or workers of the night; it applied to both feminine gay men, aswell as people we today know as transfeminine & non-binary.

J.W was born in 1883, and came to be examined and interviewed by Shufeldt in 1906 for a medical journal, during which the former brought with a husband (not legally married).

In J.W's case, they saw themselves as a woman, and carried themselves as one, even having tried various treatments to reduce body hair. The girl would also dress in public, making her what most people would then call a public female impersonator, or what Jennie June would say "an uncultured public female impersonator" — At this time, no strict distinction existed between trans+ people, impersonators & crossdressers, the terms being used for all kinds of people... A trans+ otherwise gender nonconforming person may have been called been called a sodomite, hermaphrodite, swindler etc... Just typical ignorant bigotism😭

She was active in The Bowery, & Brooklyn. Fate unknown, as far as I know, which makes sense since most of them used pseudonyms and didn't leave many traces of even having existed in the first place.

In the journal, she's described as a "passive pederast", a term which during this time did not exclusively refer to a CSA victim, but generally just a submissive person who was the passive one in sexual scenarios, typically being the "taker" in paedicatio (anal sex). This makes sense, as J.W was 23 when the examination was conducted, and was the submissive one.
