♥ OH DARN - Animation by Sp4zie & Nevercake
Okay, but let's talk Ahri and Leona for realsies. None of this "ship them because they were together for a minute" stuff, none of this "omg lesbians" thing, let's get down to what's really going on here.
Ahri is a fox. This is the first fact that needs to be understood. She is not a human, she is a fox who has been BECOMING human by devouring the souls of men, until she eventually reached the point where she felt regret for what she had been doing. She's a child learning how to interact with humans and trying to figure out what right and wrong is.
And who better to be a moral compass than Leona?
While Leona may have her flaws, she is also arguably one of the gentlest champions in the League--a woman who will defend the weak and helpless and spare those who don't deserve to die. She would be a good mentor for Ahri, and because she is no doubt popular, Ahri would probably see her as a good person to be around. She might be a little shy and hesitant, but Leona's also the type of girl who would be welcoming and know how to extend a gentle hand.
Add to that the fact that Ahri is probably fairly vulnerable and feared--and possibly overly trusting--and Leona would have plenty of reasons to stick with her: Ahri is the young one who needs some protection. Leona catnip.
If you take this and see it as such, then Leona being the super-protective guardian makes perfect sense:
...and Ahri's horror at seeing this amazing woman harmed on her behalf--something she has probably never gotten used to, if she's experienced this at all--is also understandable.
If Leona was the girl who stuck up for Ahri and kept bullies from pulling her tail, and suddenly she got hacked down...yep, that's the face.
Are they still shippable?
OF COURSE.
But I think it's a cool dynamic to explore with both of these characters as individuals.

'Ignacya and I are one and the same. And yet for the longest time, if she did half of what I've done, she would have been locked up and run through with irons. I loved her too much to let that happen.'
