“Why are you running away, Beauregard?”

“I don’t run away from anything,” she snapped. “I’m not running away.”

He looked at her backpack. She was still gripping one strap like a noose. “I know what not saying goodbye looks like.”

“Well, then why are ­you not saying goodbye?”

He was gripping his forearms with both hands now, scratching under the bandages with both hands, and not looking anywhere at her.

“Because I am a coward and a fool,” he said hoarsely, “who comes here every night and still cannot commit to anything.”
