Art gift 87 - “Uplift” . Today I’m officially 51 years old. This morning, I made tea with dried Rose of Sharon flowers, Schisandra berries, and black raspberry leaves. I ate a homemade breakfast of whole wheat sesame sourdough toast with peanut butter and rhubarb-vanilla jam. I spent Zoom-time with my twice-monthly artist/activist buddies, one in NY, one in Philly, lending and receiving support for our projects and lives. I called my father, because his memory is shot and this is the day he moves to assisted living— a move I orchestrated long-distance with many hours of phone calls and paperwork and advocacy, though a 24-hour drive with my brother and nephew from CT to FL (and back again a week later) carrying perhaps too many masks bottles of hand sanitizer, was also part of the process. And then I spent two hours troubleshooting computer issues, to no avail. Next I’ll take the dog for a run. But first, my point: enjoy it while it lasts, or if you can’t enjoy it in any given moment, at least embrace it. Show up for yourself. Be your own best ally, coach, cheerleader, research assistant, mentor, and friend. Because time flies whether you’re having fun or not. And with yourself in your corner, you can recruit all the help and companionship and compassion you need. And give all your gifts. That’s what you’re here for. . Today’s art gift (yours for the asking) is a framed mixed collage made with junk mail, paint samples, marker, and white-out.
