i think what a lot of people forget when they try to make an etymological connection with two words unrelated to each other (Like English with Turkish, Chinese with Finnish, etc.) is that phonetics can changes a lot over the centuries and have a high likelihood of not having a similar sound by the time we see them in the modern day like English "cow" and Spanish "buey" for example. wouldn’t know they’re related otherwise.
that’s why they have to face scrutiny aka deal with peer review if they want something to be accepted. I’m not saying they’re wrong for making those connections but it has to be more substantial because once upon a time people had no idea that "cow" and "buey" were related as they phonetically and semantically shifted. anyone before the 19th century would’ve thought you were crazy for saying that these two words were related and they would’ve been right at the time since there was no convincing evidence unlike today: the former favored the velar sound in and means bovines in general the latter favored the labial sound and strictly means an ox as a result of PIE *gʷṓws
