Whats the difference between linesmen and referees?
traditionally the linesmen watch the lines and the refs watch penalties. So refs will be calling slashes and high sticking while linesmen call offsides and icing. Refs also are the ones calling goals and they conduct center ice face offs following a goal or at the start of the game while Linesmen conduct most any other face off, following a stoppage of place. The Linesmen won’t necessaril be able to call penalites but they are able to talk to the refs about what they saw.
visually you can tell the difference between them because a ref will be wearing an orange armband.

What if the linesmen that died while working in/on the clacks towers were some form of undead/vitality challenged/differently alive being? They say a man isn’t dead while his name is still spoken, and some of the linesmen seem to actually believe that. As we know, belief can become reality on the Disc, so what if they weren’t really gone?
What if the hope and belief of the friends, family, and fellow linesmen combined with the frustration and superstition of customers actually meant that they were still around, and not just in memory?

The linesmen seem to consider their tower home, and some believe/feel that they can see forever, or fly with the messages.
