Leto and her children, Apollo and Artemis
Artemis and Apollo slaying the Niobids.Â
In Greek Mythology, Niobe was a queen of Thebes and mother to anywhere between 12-14 children (sources vary). She boasted that she was superior in motherhood to the goddess Leto, who only had two children... The Olympians Artemis and Apollo.Â
The divine twins could not abide by such insult to their mother and struck down the children of Niobe one by one from on high with their arrows.Â
Niobe is depicted in the Archaic style in the border of the illustration, across from Leto, mourning the loss of her children as they are felled by the arrows of Artemis and Apollo.Â
I've seen the take that Leto protects trans children due to the myth of Leukippos but I feel this fits the myth better...
Leto who protects all who are persecuted for their gender.
Leto who watches over intersex babies recovering from a surgery they couldn't consent to.
Leto who shields transgender children from their parent's transphobia.
Leto who covers women getting catcalled with her veil to hide them from watching eyes.
Leto who gives men the strength to let out the emotions they're afraid of showing.
Leto who stands beside nonbinary people advocating for inclusion.
Leto who watches over all of us who don't fit into what society expects of our genders, just like her glorious children Apollon and Artemis, and she will protect us in her tender embrace, guide us in our journeys and we will honour her by being true to ourselves and our devotions.
Leto 10102025 I am sooo happy with this one. I remember starting with a vastly different color palette (I wish I had saved a WiP to compare but I didn't) and being unsatisfied with the drawing until one day I was like I gotta do something so that I actually wanna work on this piece. That's to say you don't always feel compelled to work with what you initially thought you would and that it is ok to course correct! I surely do that a lot in personal pieces. Very glad I finished this and got to draw lord Apollo and lady Artemis (I'm already planning to draw her multiple times I have so many ideas) and their mother lady Leto. Idk I see this and I'm happy, I'm glad I gave myself the space to take time with this one
