Artemis and Apollo slaying the Niobids.

In Greek Mythology, Niobe was a queen of Thebes and mother to anywhere between 12-14 children (sources vary). She boasted that she was superior in motherhood to the goddess Leto, who only had two children... The Olympians Artemis and Apollo.

The divine twins could not abide by such insult to their mother and struck down the children of Niobe one by one from on high with their arrows.

Niobe is depicted in the Archaic style in the border of the illustration, across from Leto, mourning the loss of her children as they are felled by the arrows of Artemis and Apollo.

Reading and hearing about Artemis and Apollo slaying the children of Niobe: kind of twisted the wholesome because it’s sweet that the twins care about their mom if you ignore the dead bodies of most of Niobe‘s kids like I get what the Gods do in the sense of destroy what these people hold the most which they were bragging about especially since in some versions of the story the only children left are either one or two the same amount or the less amount of children Leto has and you know literally insulting Leto a Titan is quite deserving of some divine ass whooping but at the same time Apollo literally killed someone’s lover for something he did not do same with the other children him and Artemis killed.

Since the figure is grouped with Niobids, I wonder if these are connected to vases with tendril goddess figures on vase paintings. Also, I wonder if this image is related to these sarcophagi decorations.

the niobids were the children of amphion and niobe, who were slain by apollo and artemis because niobe, born of the royal house of phrygia, had boastfully compared the greater number of her own offspring with those of leto, apollo and artemis’ mother. khloris, amyclas, and phylomache were spared.

It’s actually rather poetic that Artemis and Apollo spared 2 of Niobe’s children, since she bragged about saying she had more children than Leto. It’s like them saying “here now you’re on the same level”.
