I understand why the term WLW isnât for everybody since not every sapphic identifies with womanhood (and it feels lame to surrender #lesbian just because itâs often shadowbanned), but I also canât help feel that some of the pushback against the Tiktok popularity of the term is also based in not wanting a shared sapphic space at all. The same people rallying for bi+ WLW to stop identifying under lesbianism (ie âYouâre not in a âlesbian relationshipâ unless itâs les4les!â) are the ones determined to keep referring to shared spaces as lesbian anyway (lesbian bars, lesbian art, lesbian historical figures, etc), and then also get offended when you refer to them as âsapphicâ, because, âExcuse you, Iâm a lesbian and Iâm proud of it!â
These folks pretend that âlesbianâ has always been an exclusive term and/or bi+ sapphics are the ones resisting a very ~simple~ semantic change because we love making ourselves the center of attention in places where we donât belong. Thatâs untrue. Bisexuals have always been identified plainly as âstraightâ or âgayâ so weâre not complaining about extra recognition, but âlesbianâ (like âgayâ) was always an umbrella defined by relations between women and other gender diverse individuals, a culture that bisexuals have participated in throughout history. âLesbianâ is a powerful globally significant world; it will take âsapphicâ decades to catch up as a replacementâand thatâs assuming itâs even allowed to. The notion is truly ridiculous, like saying a bisexual WLW/MLM actually isnât âgayâ, so please exclusively stick to this new purposefully niche term (that the real gays look down on and refuse to identify under) instead. Thatâs deliberate erasure. Thereâs been an alarming increase in purity culture rhetoric online, and itâs based in the separatism of lesbians from all other sapphics. The foundation of that idea is: âThere is something innately queerer in two lesbiansâ relationship, that can only ever be poorly immitated by non-lesbian sapphics as they will never truly deconstruct the patriarchy.â Which directly implies that mere proximity to men (here, the capacity for potential attraction) taints a womanâs agency and abilities for life.
Itâs severely icky. Itâs seriously bimisogynistic and reeks of slut-shaming. Itâs an obviously desperate tactic to deny that lesbians have anything in common with bisexual sapphics. This is biphobia, plain and simple, and I want it off my dash. The pointless divisiveness only distracts from the importance of the current climate, where lesbianism is finally gaining some recognition in pop culture. Canât we all just keep rallying behind that? That affects all sapphics, because we are all capable of lesbianismâjust as we struggle with compulsory heterosexuality. Some of us bisexuals have made lesbianism central to our lives, even. That much would be obvious if you earnestly spoke to an actual diversity of people.
