Pueblo 7: Añasco Marilyn and her husband’s local convenience store was barely damaged by the storm. They took it as a sign to help their community when they needed it most. She set up her store as a make-shift community center and center point. She became the recipient of much aid and distributed back to her neighbors. She extended lines of credit as the bank put freezes on people’s withdrawals. This lead to a debt created because she lead with her heart and did right by her people. A victim of Maria’s devastation she took valid checks that the bank refused to accept when the gas crisis was resolved and she could finally make it to their head quarters on the other side of the island. Their response was the checks were stale and she should have never taken them. During this interview we did it at a closed down beach, where the community took it into their own hands to volunteer shifts to slowly clean up and eventually replant the palm trees to bring back ecotourism to stimulate the local economy. They waited on the government, but their calls for help fell on deaf ears. They move forward with their own will and resilience. Pueblo 6: Isabela Una Guerrera! ella nos contó la historia de estar embarazada mientras azotaba el huracán. con advertencias de que podría ser su vida o la de los bebés cuando se rompió el agua, valientemente fue al hospital. El hospital no tenía poder ni luz. sin aire acondicionado las posibilidades de infecciones eran altas. Para cuando terminó de contar su historia y el pueblo de Isabela se está recuperando, todos estábamos llorando. —————————————————— she told us the story of being pregnant while the hurricane hit. with warnings that it may be her life or the babys when her water broke she bravely went to the hospital. the hospital had no power and no light. with no Airconditioning the chances of infections was high. Pueblo 5: Toa Baja Maria gave us one for the books. She has been working nonstop since the hurricane hit. She built her home higher up due to@their town being below sea level and during hurricane George she@saw how homes were completely submerged. After the hurricane hit and she saw that her home’s second floor was unaffected she knew she had to do something for@the rest of her community that wasn’t as lucky. With never having done any kind of this work before she hit the ground running with 16 people refusing in her home. A giant generator that allowed her to give power to 4 other homes. She went to companies and told them what she needed to revitalize the communities, whether it was food, tools furniture she made it happen. She turned her first floor into a medical clinic for those in her community to get the medical attention they needed. She organized hair cuts in the local barbería as well as a nail day for the ladies. She did it all. Even to this day she is cooking giant meals to feed the elderly. She led her community to one by one help fix each other’s houses only under the condition that once they fixed the home that they will join and help fix the homes of their neighbors in need. The definition of a magniniminous spirit. By the end of this interview everyone was in tears. I know @mredgardonyc wrote about a super hero, but this one womyn army is truly La Borinqueña. They created a list of the people who were the most needy to prioritize the aid. As the resources flew in they distributed it accordingly. As of June of 2018, however, the aid stopped coming so the organization stopped distributing even though if they had the resources there were people in need that could of still benefitted from it. Pastor Ortega continued to speak on the spirit of the Borinqueño. That time and time again our people have had to go up against difficult times and they have yet to be broken. Pueblo 3: Lajas Celia- This Puerto Rican Francophone enlightened us on the active role the local officials had and the mayor was even in blue jeans cleaning teh community with his own hands with everyone else. She reminisced over being asked to come to a concert for christmas where she donated her voice and brought christmas spirit to all those without power in her Pueblo.
