Pueblo 7: AΓ±asco Marilyn and her husbandβs local convenience store was barely damaged by the storm. They took it as a sign to help their community when they needed it most. She set up her store as a make-shift community center and center point. She became the recipient of much aid and distributed back to her neighbors. She extended lines of credit as the bank put freezes on peopleβs withdrawals. This lead to a debt created because she lead with her heart and did right by her people. A victim of Mariaβs devastation she took valid checks that the bank refused to accept when the gas crisis was resolved and she could finally make it to their head quarters on the other side of the island. Their response was the checks were stale and she should have never taken them. During this interview we did it at a closed down beach, where the community took it into their own hands to volunteer shifts to slowly clean up and eventually replant the palm trees to bring back ecotourism to stimulate the local economy. They waited on the government, but their calls for help fell on deaf ears. They move forward with their own will and resilience.
