#leather binding

Very pleased with how this turned out! Tarnished Gold by @primtheamazing is a fave reread of mine, and i have been wanting to give it physical form on my shelf for a while! I tried some new things with layers on the covers, and leather with faux endbands on the spine, with stenciled leather paint. I also tried leaving the edges untrimmed and speckling them, and it worked out really well!

I jacked up the stencils on the covers MULTIPLE times, but I kept redoing them until they were, if not perfect, at least better than round 1 (and 2, and 3....)

had so much fun with this NatGeo mock up for a dust jacket (also first one I've designed!). peep underneath it for the LEATHER!

TWO pics of the endband this time to show off that headcap (it's not perfect but I'm pretty happy with how well I was able to pull the leather over the endband). plus a corner detail! bc I am satisfied with my paring job for the leather & the smoothness of my corner here.

natgeo inspiration continued into the inside spreads with tons of gorgeous Thomas Moran Yellowstone lithographs (11 total, but here are 3)!

Marbled Monday

This Marbled Monday we’re sharing Night Thoughts on Life, Death & Immortality by English poet Edward Young (1683-1765). Night Thoughts is Young’s most well-known work and it was very popular during his time. This edition was published in 1793, some 50 years after the poem was originally published, by Chapman & Co., London. It features fifteen engravings, but the engraver is not identified. The poem, as it says, deals with questions of life and death, with Death featuring in many of the illustrations.

This book is a lovely example of both Turkish marbling and tree calf leather binding. It is called “tree calf” because it is calfskin treated with chemicals in such a way that the pattern on the leather resembles a tree, as shown in the picture of the back cover featured here. The marbling of the endpapers is a lovely multi-colored Turkish pattern featuring teal/green, light blue, yellow, red, and either black or dark blue. Some of the colors have changed with wear over time, but it is certainly still nice to look at!
