THIRTEEN RULES OF MASSAGE

1. Slow down when you need to. Speed up when you don’t need to slow down. Massage that’s always slow is ultimately boring massage. 2. Palpate – how can you love if you don’t know what’s there? 3. Know anatomy – not just in general. Have memorized the origins, insertions and actions for at least the 90 most important muscles. 4. Care; really care; let your care be palpable. 5. First do no harm – to yourself! Pay attention to your body mechanics and your psycho-mechanics. 6. Don’t substitute force for intelligence. 7. Take a history; your client’s complaint arises from and takes place within their whole life. You’re working on time as much as space. 8. Try to do not more than 4 sessions a day. 9. Become a boundary genius; when you hold to impeccable boundaries it becomes a powerful part of the healing process. When you create an atmosphere of total safety and trust, the healing process is initiated. 10. Don’t hedge on the business side – you are in the massage business as much as you are assisting in the healing process. 11. Get massage. Not getting massage is like a writer never reading. 12. Take a workshop at least once a year; a vacation twice a year, and a contemplative break once a day. 13. Don’t give up. Work, exacting work, moves mountains.

MASSAGING THE WILD CLIENT

“In wildness is the preservation of the world.” These words by Henry David Thoreau are ones that stuck with me from the very first moment I read them.

Yesterday I read a note on giving massage from a therapist, Dale Favier, who’s been doing bodywork for five years in Portland, Oregon. “It feels sacred to me, in the same way that wilderness feels sacred to me.” It is so true that getting masterful at doing massage and bodywork involves being willing to encounter the wildness of nature. Every person is so amazing. You’d think after 35 years in this field I would understand more about people. But sometimes I feel like I know less than when I started. Because people and nature are so wild, so enduringly deep – I tell students, I’ve just been lost and found in these forests a bit longer than you. What do I know? Pain often seems to come more from life stresses and being disconnected from oneself than from structural compromise. I once read that the most unbearable pain is the separation from God. Now, I don’t aim to advocate a religious approach to massage. But I will say – when people lose the appreciation for how wild and how sacred they are, they start to get sick. It is perhaps the greatest of human tragedies that people are not educated to celebrate and to take maximum advantage of their incredible minds and how they relate to spirit, feelings, their bodies, and actions. When we lose touch with seeing ourselves as natural wonders, that’s when we begin to lose life force. Each person is a wonder of nature and if they don’t know that – they have forgotten perhaps the most important thing in their lives. So as a teacher, I just keep on thinking up the wildest and truest things I can say! To wake people up! Because truth, to be fully activated, has to delight and surprise us – electrify us like a wild current! Sometimes I just want to shake the person (perhaps that’s the idea behind Trager or Lomi Lomi) and say, “Just look at yourself! Look how incredible you are!” This person in the mirror is a wild person! Working in the wilderness of the experimental species that is the human being is one of the most profound ways we encounter nature. We know this voyage of therapists’ and clients’ discovery to the deepest truths and fundamental enlivenment is the most important one we can take. Then that incredible living landscape , that miracle, your client looks back at you and smiles, and says, “Thank you so much for the massage! That was wild!” As therapists we must have the technical resources and knowledge to dramatically preserve and encourage the wild world of each person, to redeem them from the suffering of having forgotten who they most deeply are.
