Michelangelo used marble to sculpt La Pieta, this instantly gives a regal status to Mary and Jesus. The incredibly smooth surface would have taken a lot of time and care from Michelangelo and over-all the sculpture is very detailed. This could symbolise Marys affection for Jesus, and the love that she feels for him is reflected in the effort that Michelangelo put into this sculpture. The actions to sand down and create the smooth surface is similar to the actions of giving affection, like when someone strokes your back when you feel ill. This could, again, represent the love that Mary feels for Jesus. It could also portray her patience and gives a sense of calm, like still water, showing her trust in God, who has just taken away her only child. On-the-other-hand, if the surface was rough, it would represent hysteria and anguish (in this case), which traditionally weren’t valued emotions for a woman to have, so the smooth surface reflects the “ideal” female. Mary and Jesus aren’t in proportion in this sculpture; however, this is purposeful as Jesus is the size of a child, signifying that Jesus will forever be Marys son, and this makes us feel pity for Mary.
