my issue with so many fantasy languages is that they are more often than not just different alphabets/writing systems that, once you connect each symbol to a letter, will translate pretty directly into english. Not even any other earth language, like Spanish or Mandarin or Cherokee or anything. Which is obviously very rarely a laziness thing and is simply because making a language/writing system is hard but like. It would be so cool to see a fantasy language that is fully made up or at least translates to like. Esperanto or Inuktitut or Urdu or something. its also so wild how many fantasy world will have one single language. As if thats how our world works at all.
#I think the default to english is a symptom of how few people whose native language is English are fluent in other languages too#On top of also definitely some anglocentrism#Which sucks#But in all fairness I hated this phenomenon until i tried creating a language#Its so harddddd#worldbuilding#linguistics#Language building#So far my plans are to have three major writing systems slash languages#That correlate to spanish mandarin and some third lang#I would like for it to be a language indigenous to thr americas ideally#Though that would require me learning another language and i feel like i can barely hold on to mandarin and spanish atp#But i also can’t shake the dream of coming up with a fully original language#sigh#corvid thoughts
