My thoughts:

I'm not too much of a fan of this book, even though I wouldn't say that it was bad. I liked Kanko well enough. She's the victim of severe abuse and even though she isn't yet ready to flee her life - and by god this girl needs to run for the hills, fast - I am sure that she will do so eventually. Either that or she dies, by her own or her parents hands. And yes: her mother tried to kill Kanko (and the rest of their family) in a suicide attempt in their car and she feared that her father might do the same - also in the car.

I have two main problems with the book, with the first being how philosophical it is. The philosophical part isn't actually the problem, but the conclusion Kanko draws from it: no one is at fault for the abuse. Which I call bullshit. It doesn't matter that her father had a rough childhood with an uncaring mother, it doesn't matter that he wants the best for his children by drilling them. What matters is that he both physically and emotionally abuses all of his children. He beats and kicks and berates them and no matter how much he suffered, that doesn't excuse his behaviour. Sadly, it feels like the book is trying just that: to excuse the father from being a horrible shitty person. The fact that he stopped abusing his children once the oldest brother was big and strong enough to stop him just shows what a little worm he is. There is no way to excuse him and the fact that the book literally ends with a scene that is supposed to make the reader feel sorry for him only annoyed me. I'm not sorry for this abusive piece of shit. May he rot in hell.
