After a full semester, I am finally back working on my MD thesis… for like one week, until I start my internship in Dublin, Ireland. 🇮🇪 || 25.07.2023 Lux
What would you say the most common blood work panel you guys order on common animals is? Like for humans we have our yearly screening with CBC and lipids and the like. Is there an equivalent of that kind of standard panel for pets? Does it vary by species? By age? I'm a human med student fascinated by vet med and you guys are always so kind about answering my questions!
gettingvetted here.
For cats and dogs, ivory tower/gold standard medicine would dictate getting a CBC (complete blood count), chemistry, heartworm/tick borne disease screening, and a stool exam once yearly starting at 1 year of age, and then at 7 years of age doing this twice yearly (except the heartworm/tick borne disease/fecal screen) plus checking the thyroid and a urinalysis. I would say that most clinics are not getting this minimum database on most of their patients simply due to cost concerns. The most common bloodwork panel I commonly run is not routine (because again, most of my clients are not willing or able to spend very much on their pets) but includes a CBC, Chem 21, and total T4.
Horses, cattle, and other livestock species rarely get routine labwork other than stool exams.
Want to know how long it's been since anyone cleaned behind the desk in my lab?
I've officially finished my first week of cell lab and I'm happy to report that my cell culture has survived!!

From my dr: “Overall, lab test results look really good. Liver functions are normal as is iron level. Cholesterol levels look great & you’re not diabetic. “
She didnt mention if hormone lvls suggest menopause tho. I have appt on March 2 so will keep track of symptoms until then. Still exhausted, but leg cramps & skin yellowing of legs looks better...maybe just circulation from the extreme cold? It’s even colder today but I have stayed in bed w my heating pad. We will see.

Hello!!! So I started my research program that I’d mention in a previous post this Tuesday, and I’m thinking maybe I’ll document my thoughts/feelings on here every week or so. I’m not taking any classes this semester, so I probably won’t have too many notes to share, but maybe aesthetic or not so aesthetic lab pics will suffice haha.
But anyways, week one! It’s been so amazing~ being back in lab has been such a great feeling after not going for ~10 months due to rona. I’ve been working with a postdoc on some of her experiments, and all the people in the lab seem so sweet and encouraging. I think the most terrifying thing about all this is working with mice because they’re so squirmy and yeah, it’ll be an interesting adventure, and I’m excitedddd
