Sketch a Day Colors of 727,728,729 - Air and Earth
So for those who have been following/interested in this little spirit fox idea I have expanded it a little bit.
I like the idea that some of the oldest/original spirits of the spirit world where yinyang/balancing spirits. That there where many of them and among them where of course the four spirits of elemental balance: Hou-Fire; Shui-Water. TuDi-Earth; Kongqi-Wind. Being beings that represent the four elements in their purity their spirit forms appear and behave rather cute and innocently: Pure. But don’t let that fool you. Like most spirits they are able to alter their forms and can become beast that are as volatile as the elements they are.
They are YinYangs their innate priorities are just that: to help maintain balance between one another. They are directly connected to all elemental spirits, benders, and the four nations: this makes the spirit foxes rather loved among much of the spirit world. When Hou and Shui where forcibly removed and placed in mortal bodies to be reincarnated over and over again the spirit world felt the pain, but none more then TuDi and Kongqi. One is incomplete without the other, and two are incomplete without being four.
The two may be able to return to the spirit world should they be able to make a life together in any of their lives; however with Hou always being born a firebender and Shui a waterbender the customs and conventions of each life has always meant they where unable to come together permanently in that life. Balance was capable of being maintained so long as in each life Hou and Shui where able to find one another and the inner spirit be able to recognize one another unbeknownst to the human consciousness they reside in. But even this balance was fragile.
The 100 year war could be contributed to many things, but the balancing element of fire and water not being able to take their roles in the spirit world had an impact. Kongqi felt the deep pain when the Airbenders where destroyed, but this imbalance of Air and earth was created by the desire to destroy the avatar. The imbalance of Fire and Water was created by the war. Fire grew out of control and Water became stagnant: Hou and shui’s spirits where unable to come in any contact with one another for over a hundred years. in that 100 years they went through 5 lives (each cut short through means of war), and with each life the spirit within, unable to find and recognize the other (to be whole even for a moment), became faded, forgetful, and unable to see one another.
When born again to Zuko and Katara the spirits within where blinded to one another. Having been separated for so long they did not recognize one another. They may have felt a small tingle of spiritual recognition, but this level of recognition was nothing more then an ember or single droplet of water.Time may bring recognition, but with the Avatar having his heart set on the newest vessel that holds Shui they might once again be denied.
Kongqi and TuDi may just need to force the situation

Sketch a Day 728 - Kongqi - 5/5/17
Sorry, I forgot to post yesterdays and If Kongqi looks a little funny its because the yellow pen I originally used didn’t scan so I placed it back digitally.
The reason I drew Aang and Toph holding Kongqi and TuDi while Hou and Shui where on Katara and Zukos shoulders is based on the idea that Katara and Zuko are incarnations of Hou and Shui. Zuko and Katara are unable to hold them as they are spirits that live inside them. Aang and Toph are capable of more direct means of interacting with these elemental spirit foxes.

" hey , it's been awhile aang ! it's nice to see you again . " though exhaustion creeps into her bones , the drop from her prison break-induced adrenaline high making her eyes weigh down , she can't help the giddiness she feels from reuniting with friends . the excitement is boosted by the rush of freedom she feels , after months in captivity with no hope of escape . " what's new with you guys ? other than ... uh , the banished fire nation prince and all that ? "
