WIP WEDNESDAY
How one blanket has become a family heirloom...
Back in 2020, I designed a blanket for my eldest son during lockdown. He was three at the time, and his favourite colour was "rainbow". He had been wanting me to make him a blanket for a while, and the three months off from work due to the COVID-19 pandemic gave me the perfect opportunity to pull out my chunky knitting needles. Thus, the "Over the Rainbow Toddler Blanket" was born.
He carted that blanket everywhere around the house until he got too big for it, and then he gave it to his little brother to use in his crib in 2023. The blanket officially turned six years old this year, when the stitches finally gave way, and it became irreparable. Both boys shed some tears over losing their baby blanket and begged me to knit another one. (Actually, this time they wanted two, one for each of them.) So I set to work redesigning my original pattern, correcting a few mistakes I had made as a newbie knitwear designer, and making the blanket using Estelle Eco Cotton yarn held quadruple instead of a bulky-weight acrylic. So far, the improved design is working well. I love the feel of the cotton yarn compared to acrylic, and I think Version 2.0 will be the best yet. Of course, the blanket has to be approved by my two blanket testers to see if it's a good replica, but I'm sure it will pass with flying colours… or, in this case, "rainbow colours".
I'm hoping to post some pictures of the new blanket in the next couple of weeks, once it's finished and the updated pattern enters pattern testing. If you would like to become a future test knitter for any Times Lost Art patterns, please follow me here on Tumblr, or on Facebook and Instagram, for TLA-related updates.
