a little self explanatory, a post about (at least some of) what connects me to my ficto kintypes honestly for some it isnt super clear, brain just went 'me'. i think ill leave the ones that have that feeling out since i wont really have much to say about them

i think all of these guys also have the feeling of "thats me" so i wont be including that in the info, but i do feel connected to them all with a sense of, thats me.

with that stated, lets start!

A lot of people took the word kin, which does mean to identify as something, and used it to mean relating to something. This made it harder for new otherkin to find the community and learn the correct terms, making them think they had to make a new term, which was IRL.

People who took the otherkin terms for their own (referring to the people who purposefully do this, not people genuinely confused or questioning kin) also often claim that in order to actually identify as a character or animal, you would have to be delusional. This was origionally said to make fun of otherkin and justify pushing us out of the community we created. Later, some people who identified as fictional characters thought that this was factual rather than a tool to make fun of us, and so beleived they must be delusional even though most of them are not.

Otherkin can be delusional, and delusional people can of course be otherkin. However, being otherkin alone does not fit criteria for delusions even remotely. Some folk do have their delusions affect their alterhumanness, and some of them identify as Endles, which is a term for someone's whoes delusions make them identify as an animal or a fictional character made by someone who is actually delusional. The dog can probably explain thatbit better than I can, over at @strawberrybabydog

Basically, the terms IRL and DA dont tend to becused by people who know the proper history of the otherkin community, as they are newer words that mean the same thing as otherkin, and were only made due to misinformation.

But please, do not be upset with folks who use these terms, as it isnot their fault misinformation about the kin community has been so widely spread. Because they do identify as their 'type, they are welcome to identify as otherkin and have a place in the community.

I kinda feel maybe we should have some ground rules for this account(don’t worry if you have sent an ask already- this has nothing to do with what you have requested).

Basically I’m just gonna list what we aren’t okay with but it’s pretty short and kinda self explanatory:

And then here’s a list of what kinds of things we do:

-MOODBOARDS/AESTHETICS, the main one that we are actually good at. Please remember to not only give us the name of your kin but also what they are from and (optional) colours and themes you want.

-KIN CALLS, just send us an ask with your kin and maybe any extra information that could help you find who you’re looking for and hopefully you can find them!

I’ve often seen something here on tumblr that I believe needs to be addressed. And that is, how past lives =/= kin.

Let me explain. Being kin means you identify as an animal/creature/fictional character, of course. But being kin isn’t a belief, let alone a belief in reincarnation. Many kin don’t believe their identity is caused by something spiritual. The belief in reincarnation is a spiritual belief, and of course everyone is entitled to their own belief, or lack of beliefs. But, I see many people making a connection where there is none. If you believe the cause of your kin identity is reincarnation, that is totally fine. But when you assume that believing you had a past life as a particular animal/character/etc makes that your kintype, that is where I draw the line.

There are many religions that believe in reincarnation, and though some believe their past lives affect their current life in some ways, they do not identify as who they were in their past life, therefore they are not kin. Kin is not a belief, so you cannot “believe” you are kin in that way. Kin is an internal identity, more of a personal feeling you can’t explain in other words or terms, a feeling you have all/most of your life, one that affects who you are as a person. A belief is not like that at all. Perhaps you had a past life as, for example, a sailor. You may believe that because of this, you are drawn to the sea a bit more than normal people, or have a natural talent for things you did in your past life. But, obviously, that doesn’t make you sailorkin. You are still a very different person from who you were in your past life. Much like how something from your childhood may make you nostalgic, but you know it’s not who you are anymore, as you are no longer a child.

Now let’s say you had two past lives as two different animals. One past life was a snake. You may have dreams or visions through a snake’s eyes, and occasionally have snake shifts, but you often don’t feel like a snake. You know you were once a snake, but you don’t feel snake enough in this life to call yourself a snake therian. You may relate to snakes in your personality a bit, but again, it doesn’t affect you enough that you feel like you identify as a snake.

And your second past life, let’s say was a coyote. For whatever reason, this past life affects you a lot. You see coyotes, either in pictures or in person, and feel as if you are looking at a mirror or looking at your own kind. You have some coyote instincts and frequently have a coyote-like mindset. You enjoy imagining physically being a coyote and doing coyote things, as it feels correct to you. You identify as a coyote. Therefore, you are a coyote therian.

Of course, no one can tell you who/what you are. If you identify as x then no one can tell you otherwise. I don’t know how you feel, I can’t see into your mind, so it’s entirely your job to determine whether a past life is a kintype or not.

(I feel like that was unclear but I mean someone saying they kin Naruto for example but only because they have similar traits to him and don't actually believe they are/were Naruto.)

That sort of thing started out as a joke but unfortunately made people think thats what kin really is and now people mean it genuinely. As a trend its bad because it makes it harder for otherkin to find their community and confuses people new to the community wanting legitimate information. It also can create a situation where an otherkin thinks something is an otherkin friendly space, only for them to get bullied when the people claiming to be kin who only relate to the character realize they actually identify as their kintype for real (this has happened to me and a few of my close friends).

However, just because it is a bad thing thats happening does not mean that individuals who do this are bad. Usually they are just genuinely misinformed, and it is Never okay to harass or dogpile indivuals who do this. The best practice is simply to continue to spread correct information about what otherkin are so that true otherkin can continue to find their community. We also ask that once people understand what otherkin are, to please stop using the term for other things since it is very harmful to our community.

The practice of identifying with characters though, and making that part of yourself, is fun and healthy though! It is only the stolen termonology i have a problem with, not the activity itself.

For those who feel the things they relate to are a deep part of their identity, other hearted is a good and accurate term.

For those who mainly do it for fun (but it can still be important to you! Just typically less ingrained and more subject to change than otherhearted) Cir, or Cirrie (which stands for character i relate to, and was created within the 'kinnie' community as an alternative to using kin terms, rather than from the otherkin community which is another reason some prefer it) is a good and accurate term.

Do you have any advice or even just clearer definitions? Having a hard time figuring out where I fit in. :(

You're okay! It's okay to have difficulties, and its okay to experiment with your identity. Not everything you consider has to stick.

Being otherkin just means you identify as your kintype on some level. It can just be an internal thing, like, that is how you see yourself on the inside. Its also okay for the intensity or the feelings to come and go; that's why there is talk about 'kin shifts' and such like. It doesn't have to be 100% all the time.

For example, as you know I am Flowey from undertale, but overtime this identity has grown less important to me. If i think about it i go yes, thats still me, but its not something i Feel Deeply all the time.

On the otherhand, i am also a winged wolf kin, and I feel this as the default, all the time. It is always present in the way i move, my thoughts, and the way i attempt to use body language in limbs that are not there. It is as if I have a spiritual body overlaid my physical one at all times.

They are both kintypes, just flowey is one i get shifts for occasionally, while the wolf i am shifted as constantly unless experiencing a different shift.

So if you beleive you Are a fictional character at all, you can identify as fictionkin.

Cir is simply, a character you relate to! Any character that you like to imagine yourself as or feel represents you can be a Cir. It can still be important to your identity, but it is more of a RP or hat you try on rather than something you beleive is actually you.

Really it comes down to how you feel, and any term is probably ok as long as you understand what it means. Its okay to be mistaken and change your mind later. Misusing kin language is more of an issue when people think that being otherkin is the same as cir by definition, and called otherkin delusional and convince many who arent delusional that they are, and making people reinvent the wheel with terms like IRL which just mean what otherkin always was supposed to mean.

An individual such as yourself who knows it means that you identify as it using the term kin to see if it fits is NOT harmful. Even if you later decide you dont fully id as something, you arent spreading misinfo about what otherkin are so youre perfectly ok! Dont be afraid to experiment with labels and see what fits.
