Therian means you identify/spiritually connect with an animal or creature of this world. Anything that lives or that has lived on this planet can be a theriotype. Dinosaur therian, yep. Insect therian, you bet. And of course your standard mammals, birds, and reptiles as well: wolf, horse, fox, bear, crow, lizard, whale, snake, hawk etc.

However, things that are not creatures or that have not lived or can't be proven that they existed on this planet can not by theriotypes. For example, a dragon therian is not a thing. Believe what you want but science has yet to actually prove dragons existed on our planet. You would however be dragon kin! Same goes for angels, demons, ghosts, mermaids, harpies, and other mythical creatures and beings not of this world. These are all kin types, not theriotypes.

Now on the opposite side, otherkin is all inclusive. Just about anything and everything can be a kin type, including theriotypes. That's where the interchangeability comes from. You can choose to use the term even if it is a theriotype. It's just personal preference.

Using myself as an example, I could call myself wolfkin if I so pleased. And when I was speculating if I was also mermaidkin, I did use the term kin instead of therian, only because to me it was easier to say "I'm wolfkin and mermaidkin" than to say "I'm a wolf therian and mermaidkin". Again it is personal preference! I later found out I'm not mermaidkin, so I went back to calling myself just a wolf therian.
