I haven't seen Thumbelina (1994) since the 90s, but watched a bit today. Two things immediately came to mind.
Clearly these are the same animators as Anastasia (1997) because dear lord, they really only knew one way to draw a dude's facial expressions and one way for a girl's body movement.
Gender stuff. Did I relate to Thumbelina as a child? Maybe a little. But also to the prince who went out for adventures on his bumblebee (reminds me of Aladdin on his carpet or Tarzan in his vines, whom I used to play-pretend a lot) and most of all, to the flamboyant narrator Jacquimo the Swallow. 💜 That bird captures the essence of my soul.
